The aim of my PhD project was to evaluate the role of microRNAs cellular mechanisms such as differentiation and senescence in skin biology. We analysed the relationship between miR203 and p63, an important transcription factor for skin development and maintenance of the differentiating stratified epithelium of the epidermis. Subsequently, I have been working on the role of a discrete set of microRNAs, identified by MicroArray, in the regulation of replicative senescence pathways in primary… Show more The aim of my PhD project was to evaluate the role of microRNAs cellular mechanisms such as differentiation and senescence in skin biology. Subsequently, I have been working on the role of a discrete set of microRNAs, identified by MicroArray, in the regulation of replicative senescence pathways in primary human keratinocytes. In particular we have identified a regulation pathway involving p63, miRs 138, 130 and 181 and SirT1. Show less

      Laurea Triennale Biologia

During the experimental work for my thesis, done at the Department of Biochemical Sciences "A. Rossi Fanelli" of the University La Sapienza of Rome, with the supervision of prof. M. Eugenia Schininà, I have undertaken the structural analysis of M. leprae’s truncated haemoglobin O, aiming for the identification of the two residues of tyrosine that would lead to the biphenyl linkage. This work has been carried out in collaboration with prof. P. Visca’s group at the Dept.of Biology and… Show more During the experimental work for my thesis, done at the Department of Biochemical Sciences "A. Independent Translator

For a few years, as I was studying at the University, I worked as a translator for ENAPRA, at the Italian Ministry of Agriculture.I was translating Italian into English and into French for the European project Agrisavoir.

    • Paris-Sud University (Paris XI)

      Sept 2005 - Mar 2006
      Visiting Student

Stage as graduate student at Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biophysics Institute (IBBMC) of the National Scientific Research Centre (CNRS), at the University Paris-Sud 11 in Orsay (France), supervisor prof. Pierre Le Maréchal.During my last year as a graduate student in the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, I have decided to do a stage in a foreign country in order to learn new research techniques and approaches. I worked for a six months stage in prof. Pierre Le Maréchal’s group, working in the chemistry of proteins field. During this period I identified the targets of the Thioredoxin/Thioredoxin Reductase system in Saccharomyces cerevisiae using a proteomic strategy coupled to a differential labelling technique. Jul 2008 - Aug 2008
      Visiting PHD Student

During my PhD I went to collaborate with prof. Melino’s group in Leicester in order to learn neurobiology techniques and to unravel the role of microRNAs involved in brain morphogenesis and cortical neuron differentiation in a p73 null background.

    • EMBO - excellence in life sciences

      Jan 2012 - Dec 2013
      EMBO Fellow

As EMBO Fellow, I have managed a research project from the initial design phase through its implementation and results dissemination. The project aimed at exploring a new avenue for cell replacement therapy for Parkinson's Disease. In particular we decided to reprogram glial cells resident in the brain into neurons, to replace the dopaminergic neurons killed by the disease's progression. To achieve this goal I have modified and optimized a new protocol for direct conversion in vitro and in vivo. Show less

    • Karolinska Institutet

      Nov 2014 - May 2017

As research fellow (subsidized by the Swedish Research Council, the EMBO and the Karolinska Institute), my tasks were managing and implementing research projects from the initial design phase to completion, in addition to results dissemination, reporting and publication. During my post-doc I developed a new protocol for in vivo conversion of astrocytes into dopaminergic neurons, as a new cell replacement approach for Parkinson’s Disease. In addition I was also involved in the following:• Student supervision.• Public speaking at conferences and seminars.• Teaching to students of the Medicine, and Biomedicine courses at the University of Malaga.• Teaching to students of the Medicine, Dentistry and biomedicine courses at Karolinska Institutet. Marie Curie Fellow

As Post-doctoral fellow sponsored by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowships program of the European Commission, I have managed a research project from the initial design phase to implementation for the generation of a disease modelling platform based on directly-reprogrammed medium spiny neurons to screen new therapeutic compounds against Huntington’s Disease.
