      Oct 2004 - May 2008
      Teacher

The focus of my career in the Shawnee Mission School District was vocal music for students in grades 7 and 8. Both schools began with small, struggling choir programs that saw exponential increase in numbers during my tenure. An effort was made to improve the choir's importance and vitality in the school and community by improving the final musical product at concerts and festivals. An emphasis on independence, informed decision making, and engaged learning cultivated in each choir member a passion for music and the transcendent joy of singing well with others. For many, this was a first experience in the lifelong lesson that great achievement takes hard work, but affords great outcomes. Students received superior ratings at district solo and ensemble festivals, and multiple students each year were selected to elite, statewide choirs organized by KMEA and KCDA.I co-directed the all-school musicals each year, productions included The King and I, Jr., Honk, Jr., and Willy Wonka. • North Kansas City School District

      Aug 2008 - Aug 2010
      General and Vocal Music Teacher

Students in 1st-5th grade looked forward to music class twice weekly at Ravenwood Elementary. With excellent lesson design and delivery, children's innate love of music was refined to develop a deeper appreciation of music. Children were given the necessary tools and safety of exploration to improve skills in dance, vocal and instrumental music. A love and understanding of music that created a lifelong music consumer was fostered in each child.I also achieved reinstatement of the budget for vital community singing opportunities. This included creating a new concert involving the students’ matriculating middle and high school choirs. As a co-teacher in the middle school classroom, a culture of rigor, precision, and passion was cultivated that afforded each student the opportunity to feel the transcendent joy of singing well with others. For many, this was a first experience in the lifelong lesson that great achievement takes hard work, but affords great outcomes. Students obtained superior ratings at middle school district contests and overall Grand Sweep, Grand Champion at Music in the Park Festivals.I also co-wrote and co-taught the curriculum for a new online class, Discovering the Arts, in which appreciation for art, theatre, and music was taught online for students who needed an alternative pathway to Fine Arts credit. Those in the Children’s Choir at First Presbyterian Church, Lawrence, learn that tithing is giving time and talents back to the church—and that’s something kids can do! I rehearse the Choir every Sunday as part of their Sunday School hour. The children stage a pageant each Christmas, and sing in the worship services once a month.
