    • Kingspan Offsite

      Sept 2007 - Jun 2008
      Building Performance Engineer

The job involved extensive energy modelling for houses (using SAP) and designing and specifying domestic ventilation and solar hot water systems. Working for a manufacturer helped me understand their operation and needs and gain an in depth knowledge of houses, their energy systems and their energy use.

I led the implementation of the ESG Strategy across Real Estate. I also inputted into a broad range of ESG issues across the wider Private Markets team. I managed a mixed team of secondees, full time employees and an extensive supply chain. Some of the things my team and I achieved include: >Integrating people from across the supply chain, to have a one team attitude, to help implement Aviva Investors sustainability goals>Changing the culture and supporting all people at Aviva Investors to help embed ESG into everyday thinking>Setting up sustainable design standards for developments and rolling out a NABERS programme>Rolling out ESG into the new property management agreement>Enhancing the ESG due diligence process and contributing to the Investment Committee>Supporting the ESG data strategy>Developing the tools to support asset managers deliver retrofit at scale Show less I work in the sustainability team. I win and manage the delivery of work over the whole range of sustainability in buildings. This includes Wellbeing, BREEAM, Environmental design/ Building physics, LCA and POE.I am a technical expert for Indoor Environmental Quality and I am leading the development of Wellbeing services. I have delivered projects using the WELL Standard and the five ways to Wellbeing to shape built environment Wellbeing strategies.I project manage the financial, technical and organisational elements of the projects I work on. Show less I published 2 journal papers, a book chapter and a number of conference papers. I was awarded Researcher of the year.My thesis uses four studies to outline a series of problems that should be overcome to improve the specification of sensor systems to monitor, measure and evaluate people’s experience of the indoor environment. These are also relevant to the use of parameters to define building performance in design as part of parametric design. These problems are:• It is not simple or straightforward to reduce even simple environmental stimuli to single parameters that are representative of occupant experience:o During the post occupancy evaluation that we carried out we uncovered emergent factors that are important for understanding overall building performance; these factors cannot be linked to component IEQ factors. o In another of our studies we contrast the experience of sound, which is more complex and requires a greater degree of information processing, to that of air temperature, which is simpler and can be modelled according to energetic principles. It is harder to parameterise the former.• Physiological sensors can be used to identify salient environmental experiences. This might, in the future, help to characterise complex environments. However, it would reveal little about the underlying thought processes (i.e. why the experience was occurring).• An alternative way to characterise complex experiences (such as privacy or soundscapes) is to categorise, grade and combine elements of the physical environment. This remains problematic for sensor systems.• Appraisals can be used to understand the thought process that underpins experience of the environment. However, they require that user feedback is incorporated into future sensor systems. Appraisals offer a compact method (as few as five questions) for unlocking some underlying thought processes and they could be used to identify where problems have a psychological as well as physical dimensions. Show less I worked in the sustainability team and did consulting and analytical work. The three main themes of work were building energy modelling, life cycle analysis and energy systems planning. While in this role I developed my expertise and knowledge of energy systems and the software tools that can be used to gain insight into their application and use. This has included developing several excel based tools to make project work more efficient. I have also led their capacity in carbon management first by inheriting an LCA project and then developing this later through collaboration with another department on a building based carbon footprint. My key projects included: Decentralised energy capacity study, London. Client: GLA / DECCBuro Happold was commissioned by the Greater London Authority to establish the technical, practical and economic potentials for decentralised energy in London. The project involved reviewing secondary sources of information, modelling representative scenarios, parametric modelling and a number of reports. For this project I oversaw the development of the modelling work and also took part in the analysis, reporting and supervising the work of a graduate on the job. Carbon modelling, School, London. Client: Balfour BeattyPFI schools have contractual obligation, with tough financial penalties, to meet in use carbon targets from electricity and fuel use. These unique obligations required the development of energy modelling techniques to include unregulated emissions. This work was used to demonstrate the importance of reducing energy consumption from unregulated sources, such as IT and catering.Solar Energy Seminars, Barcelona, Institute of Advanced Architecture Catalonia (IaaC)I gave six hours of solar energy lectures and seminars to fourth year architecture students.
