Recognizing that a key missing ingredient in the community was afterschool programming for kids, Gail took on the task of bringing in the Boys and Girls Club to the community. Gail oversaw a fundraising dinner that contributed substantially to the effort and served for two years as the Board Secretary for the Boys and Girls Club of Lake County – Zion-Benton Unit start up board. Today, the Boys and Girls Club exits serving over 400 youth. Gail saw another opportunity to directly impact the lives of youth and completely revamped Zion Township’s Summer Work Program away from a task-oriented focus to that of mentorship and infusing key character traits along with a solid work ethic into the lives of the youth. Gail voluntarily drove the van to assist with the Youth Leadership Team bringing together students from six schools to work collectively on community issues. Impact:One of the goals of the Summer Work Program is to teach youth from underprivileged families the foundation of a work ethic and prepare them to enter the workforce with the basic skills needed to achieve self-sufficiency and ultimately break the cycle of poverty. In the past 14 years, over 1,000 youth have participated in the program and have learned the application and interview process, earned a few paychecks, received money management skills, and completed work projects that enhance the community. In 2015, Gail gave special attention to hiring mentors instead of supervisors and working strategically to infuse key character traits into the youth, including respect, responsibility, safety, kindness, perseverance and integrity, which are the traits the entire community has adopted. Many of our youth even gain part time employment at the agencies they are placed at after the Summer Work Program session was completed. Show less
