      Graduate Assistant

In my first semester of being a GA, I was tasked with acting as the Graduate Advisor for WIU’s emergency management club, IESMA. In this role, I assist with recruitment and promotion, facilitating meetings, producing the schedule, and providing meeting topic ideas. Aside from acting as IESMA’s grad advisor, I also assist the Law Enforcement and Justice Administration Department with their semester events (career fair and open house). At the career fair, I work with the other grad assistants in setting up the event and checking in the agencies. At the open house, I assist a professor with search and rescue tracking techniques and thermal imaging. On the emergency management side of things, I have attended trainings on Juvare, D4H, and PDC Threat Assessment. Additionally, I work in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on campus. While in the EOC, I supervise two other graduate assistants and prepare situational reports (sitreps) for my supervisor. Show less

    • Amtrak

      May 2023 - Aug 2023
      Emergency Management Intern

As an Emergency Management Amtrak intern, I have learned the four pillars of the Safety Management System (SMS). The four pillars include Safety Policy, Safety Assurance, Safety Risk Management, and Safety Promotion. This summer, the Emergency Management Department hosted 29 Happy Healthy Safety Fairs (HHSFs) across the country. Safety promotions was the driving force behind the HHSFs. I was able to provide logistical support for the HHSFs as well as communicate the roles and responsibilities of the EM dept to other Amtrak employees. Following the HHSFs, I assisted in the updating of Facility Emergency Plans (FEPs), created surveys with the help of ChatGPT, helped record prize winners from the HHSFs, and distributed prizes to winners all over the country. In the last three weeks of my internship, I was able to spend time with folks that work in the safety policy, safety assurance, and safety risk management realms. At the beginning of my last three weeks, the risk management team was working on a project dedicated to increasing safety around highway grade crossings. I assisted this team by using data to identify the most dangerous highway crossings around the country. I was also involved in filling out risk assessments and identifying mitigations for these highway crossings. In my last week, I went into the field, and conduct a risk assessment on-site. Over the course of the summer, I have become very familiar with logistics, Microsoft Forms, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint. Show less
