      Placement Student

I shadowed various different clinical scientists across Poole hospital to learn about how science was utilised within the healthcare sector to change lives. I spent time in the radiotherapy department, medical imaging department, biochemical labs, haematology labs and clinical engineering department. It was during this week that I gained a keen interest in clinical biochemistry.

    • Grey College JCR

      Nov 2018 - Dec 2019
      Senior Freshers' Representative

As an elected JCR officer, I was ultimately responsible for the organisation and running of both the Post Offer Visit Days and Freshers' Week for the incoming 2019 freshers. I also remained a point of contact for freshers, and represented their views to the JCR by sitting on the Representatives Committee.During the open days, I managed a team of 21 people to deliver a unique and exciting experience for over 90 applicants across two days. I ensured that these applicants received the best and most realistic experience of college and university life with activities planned during the afternoon and evenings.During Freshers' Week I managed a team of 46 people over two weeks to give over 400 freshers the best opportunity to settle into new university life. This included a week of training the team in both practical and pastoral skills to make the week itself as smoothly as possible. With the help of a senior team, I worked for 4 months to plan and organise Freshers' Week itself. I was ultimately responsible for a budget of £12,000 and oversaw the development of the college branding and publications to incoming freshers', as well as organising a full timetable for the week that was both exciting and inclusive to all. Aug 2019 - Sept 2019
      Research Assistant

Working as part of the DNS Research group, I investigated the effect of a combination of small molecules on the protein Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR), trying correct it’s folding and stability defect in mutants F508del and A561E. I presented my research, in the form of a poster, at the UK CF Conference and received third place for my work. My work aimed to further the development of new precision drugs targeting the root cause of Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Some of my work contributed to a book chapter published in Ion Channels as Targets in Drug Discovery (Veselu et al. 2024). Show less

      Jan 2020 - Jul 2022
      Graduate Research Assistant

Working as part of a large European study team, I worked as a graduate research assistant for the cASPerCF clinical trial. I ensured that the cASPerCF study works best for everyone by involving, empowering and listening to patients and their families. I also contributed to the wider work of the study and of the MRC Centre of Medical Mycology and the Exeter University Clinical Trials Unit. For example, I took the lead on a project with Prof. Adilia Warris to assess the influence of Aspergillus infection on COVID-19 disease severity in people with CF, published in the Journal of CF (Bradbury and Chesshyre et al. 2023)cASPerCF was a clinical trial aiming to assess the dose of posaconazole in children and young people with Cystic Fibrosis and Aspergillus infection. The study was part of connect4children, a large collaborative pan-European network that aims to facilitate the development of new drugs and other therapies for the European paediatric population.
