    • Agilent/Avago Technologies

      Nov 2004 - Mar 2009
      Senior RND Engineer

Involved in the design, analysis, and evaluation of GSM quad band transmitter for handsets. The package integrates a voltage control current scheme for power control. Also, had the chance to work on W-CDMA transmitter that uses a VDET power control scheme. Some of the skill sets gained from Avago/Agilent Technologies are as follow:• Using Allegro PCB editor• Simulating circuits using ADS and Momentum• Editing VEE program for bench measurement to suit various productsOne of my greatest achievements in Avago is my contribution to a study of heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) as compared to pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT). Taping out demo board using ADS MOMENTUM that is use for evaluating our parts, which I have not done in Motorola, is another achievement that I am proud of. The most recent accomplishment is the success in widening of bandwidth for one of our products from 1.7GHz – 2.5GHz to 1.7GHz – 2.7GHz to cater for WiMAX application. Show less

      Apr 2009 - Apr 2010
      Senior Design Engineer – RF

Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (LTCC) Manufacturing Process Limitations:I was sent to UESTC in Chengdu for training to gain further understanding of LTCC processes. In addition to LTCC design rules, knowledge from the training enabled me to:· Understand the process limitations that directly impact my design· Contribute my understanding to the process team that has a direct impact on our productsColdFusion Product Portfolio – Antenna Design:The first eight months at ColdFusion Engineering, I have been the key person in:· Designing LTCC antenna that adds to our product portfolio· Overseeing the testing of LTCC Bluetooth antennaLTCC and Spark Gap Design:During the engagement with one of our potential customers, I had the opportunity to investigate spark gap designs that are used for ESD suppression. Together with my understanding of LTCC manufacturing process limitations, I was able to contribute my understanding of LTCC spark gap designs to our customers.IP Acquisition – Feasibility Study of Dual ISM Band Antenna:My last few months at ColdFusion Engineering, I performed a feasibility study on two different dual ISM band (2.4GHz and 5.8GHz) antenna designs. This study was motivated by management’s interest to acquire an intellectual property (IP) on one of the designs. Conclusion from this feasibility study actually provided management the necessary information to make a sound decision in not acquiring the IP of interest. As a result, unnecessary spending/investment was prevented.Thermal Spread Angle and Thermal Resistance Calculator:One of my last assignments at ColdFusion Engineering was to actually perform a study and brief the management on thermal spread angle and thermal resistance based on customer’s interest in this area. This provided me an opportunity to come up with a calculator in computing thermal spread angle and thermal resistance that could be use by anyone regardless of the person’s knowledge in this area of study. May 2010 - Jan 2013
      Staff Engineer (Development)

Tester Trigger Reduction:I was given the chance to lead in the investigation of tester triggers due to elevated noise floor over time. The success in tester noise floor trigger reduction has increased:· Mean time between failure· Mean lot tested between failure· Tester up time in our productionIn addition, indicators on Seagate Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts showed significant improvement post implementation of the solution. Tester noise floor trigger reduction project was honored the Best Team Award at Seagate, Penang in May 2011. Given the success of the solution, both Seagate sites in Thailand; namely Korat and Teparuk; have expressed interest in/adopted the solution.Reduction of Defects (in %) caused by Scratches:Thru careful process mapping and design of experiment (DOE), I was able to lead the team to hypothesize and successfully identify the root cause of scratches on our sliders. This opportunity not only led to another Best Team Award at Seagate, Penang in February 2012, but also gave the team opportunities to investigate the possible solutions to the issue.Impact of Process Flow on Unstable Heads:In this project, I was one of the team members investigating the impact of our process on unstable heads. This project led to a complex analysis/calculation, which in turn gave me the opportunity to create an Excel macro using VBA script that assisted us in our analysis. This macro has:· Automated our time consuming calculations· Prevented unnecessary errors in our calculationsFMEA Performance-Improvement Matrix:In addition to the above responsibilities, I assisted in coming up with the new Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) Performance-Improvement Matrix on my own initiative using Microsoft Excel without having to create a macro – a simple yet elegant solution to be used as a template by Penang Seagate engineers. Motivation behind the new FMEA Performance-Improvement Matrix is a new revision in FMEA that Seagate is embarking on. Show less

      Jan 2013 - Jun 2014
      Senior Staff Electrical Engineer (RND)

In addition to GLONASS, I have worked on the following:Rx Step Attenuator:For the Rx step attenuator, we are able to reduce the cost by replacing the current package part with discrete components, but the disadvantage is larger PCB space is required and we do not have the luxury of PCB space based on current radio design. A suggestion was to eliminate the output DC blocking capacitor since there is another DC blocking capacitor at the attenuator input. However, based on my H(s) computations (and ADS simulation), I was able to show that the capacitor is a DC blocking capacitor, but when placed in a network together with other components, the removal of it will change the network H(s)/S21 second order response to first order (i.e., ineffective filtering of lower frequencies). Changing of the input blocking capacitor value to compensate for the removal of the output capacitor will not help either since this will only change the cutoff frequency value that may not be desirable. Hence, with a strong understanding of the relationship between S21 and H(s), I was able to prevent what would have been an unnecessary and costly design cycle.Rx Front-end Pre-selector Bandpass Filter:As for the Rx front-end pre-selector bandpass filter, we were looking into the opportunity of reusing this circuit in radios operating at other frequency band. Similar to the efforts in the Rx step attenuator, my understanding of filter response base on H(s) computation and relationship between S21 and H(s) have prevented what would have been unnecessary efforts in the wrong direction for the feasibility study of reusing this circuit.CREST Research Grant:In addition to the work done above, I have also successfully secured a research grant from Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science & Technology (CREST). The research topic is in the field of Human-Machine Interface (HMI). The grant is worth RM405,606.40 and it is awarded to selected few from the industry twice every year. Show less

    • Plexus Electronics Assembly

      Jul 2015 - Oct 2016
      Senior Engineer (Functional Test)

Plexus is a contract manufacturer where we work together with customers to design, develop, manufacture, and test their products; hence Plexus a product realization company – a one-stop design center. At Plexus, I was given the opportunity to duplicate a tester in my first assignment for one of our customers, Medtronic; a medical device company. This assignment took a duration of approximately four months. Tasks involve included parts procurement, supervising tester assembly and wiring activities, testing and debugging, verification, installation, and logistics. At the same time, I was involved in another project where we had to design the testers for another customer, Bayer. In that project, one of my notable contributions was providing the anechoic chamber design concept that caters for our operators’ average height. This design:· Accommodates the height of operators· Allows operators to open and close the anechoic chamber with easeIn addition, I have also supported production. In one of my supports, I successfully assisted them in determining the root cause of high variability and low Cpk in one of their test cases during production qualification of a newly duplicated test fixture. In my root cause analysis, it showed that the high variability and low Cpk were caused by:· One of the three gold units used in running the qualification· One of the four testers used in running the qualificationIn the above root cause analysis, based on the problem defined ("D"MAIC) by our customer (Medtronic) who reviewed the data measured (D"M"AIC) by Plexus Manufacturing, I effectively analyzed (DM"A"IC) the data and accurately determined the root cause of high variability and low Cpk. Based on my analysis, I then recommended the “improvement” (DMA"I"C) to Plexus Manufacturing. Show less
