  Deckhand

  From 2008 to 2010 I was employed on the Sydney Harbour Cruise vessels Starship Sydney (max. 800 pax) and The Pontoon (max. 300 pax). In the course of my employment as a deckhand I was involved with routine and operation of the vessels. Tasks included pre-sea checks, mooring, gangway procedure, refueling, fresh water bunkering, engine checks, navigation and ensuring the safety of our passengers and crew.While working on Sydney Harbour I first got my taste for working on the water. In this role I was responsible for facilitating the operational requirements of charters and ensuring the vessel was ready to receive guests on time. I learned independent work habits and developed my problem solving skills in ways that have since served me well. Show less

  Navigation Officer

  During my tenure with NCLH I was first employed as a cadet then subsequently as a 2nd Officer, 1st Officer and 1st Navigation Officer. I sailed aboard cruise ships ranging from 70000GRT to 145000GRT. In the course of my duties I was responsible for maintenance and management of life saving appliances, training of crew (both STCW and company mandated safety trainings), planning and execution of drills, passage planning, maintenance of charts and publications, testing and maintenance of bridge navigation and safety systems, GMDSS equipment tests and operation as well as ensuring correct completion of the deck log book, company SMS procedures and statutory paperwork and documentation.In my time at NCLH I managed multiple successful external audits of the vessels navigation and safety procedures and equipment and spearheaded navigational and operational planning for the Norwegian Getaways inaugural Baltic cruising season; at the time she was the largest cruise ship offering regular Baltic Sea cruises.I worked closely with technical contractors from many firms, these interactions greatly expanded my technical knowledge and proficiency in electronic navigation systems, life saving appliances and fire detection and fighting systems.   At Silversea I was charged with navigational, environmental and safety duties. Primarily I was assigned the duties of an environmental officer and as such have been responsible for ensuring environmental compliance; coordinating garbage disposal in accordance with garbage management plans, local regulations and MARPOL V, cooperating with local garbage disposal companies to best minimise environmental impact and ensuring cost effectiveness. In the course of my environmental duties I became conversant in ballast water management regulations and increased my familiarity with port state and international ballast water regulations. This knowledge was critical when planning and executing ballast operations.I was charged with supervising the incinerator man and ensuring correct operation of waste management equipment and machinery. Implementing and ensuring the effectiveness of the vessels waste stream segregation. Regular crew training was also an aspect of this job.Further in addition to environmental responsibilities at various times I have been responsible for passage planning in accordance with the vessels SMS, completing company voyage reports and undertaking routine tests and maintenance of bridge equipment. My role involves leading the development and implementation of shipboard and shore-side procedures with a strong emphasis on safety, environmental compliance, and continuous improvement.I have implemented and trained crew in the use of ERP systems, to streamline operations and enhance reporting accuracy. My work extends to managing compliance with EU emissions regulations, strengthening fleet-wide cyber security, and addressing findings from audits to improve safety protocols and operational readiness. Additionally, I lead efforts to establish robust incident reporting and investigation processes that drive accountability and foster a proactive safety culture across ship and shore teams. Show less
