  Graduate research focused on defining the residence time of fine-grained particles in a gravel-bed river. In order to do this, I used gamma spectroscopy to determine radionuclide (Pb-210, Cs-137 and Be-7) activity. The activity found on the fine (clay and silt-sized) sediment in the river allows you to determine the age of these sediments. Using the sediment's age, reservoir theory is utilized to determine the turnover time of sediment in a reservoir (in this case, the river bed). This work is important in contaminant cycling in rivers. If we can determine the residence time of the sediment, it allows us to know the time it will take for the contaminants attached to the sediment to be removed from the river system. Show less
