Usability is a comprehensive topic that covers everything from straightforward electronic health record design, in order to reduce errors and enhance workflows to promoting patient safety and protecting patient privacy. The lack of standardization in usability for the electronic health record is a key concern for an organization promoting standards, such as Health Level 7. I chose as my synthesis of practice of health informatics, the current work occurring on usability of the electronic health record. Health Level 7 Usability Work Group has requested assistance in creating standards to present to Health Level 7, in the United States. This body of work is intended for compiling and comparing usability heuristics and usability issues in order to present a white paper of proposed standards of usability for the electronic health record.
