      Part time role hosting large school groups (Inreach) and the general public to hands on science centre. Worked with a wide range of ages with understanding of different education levels (Early years, KS1, KS2, KS3) and SEN (special education needs) requirements (autism awareness training given). I assisted visitors in the correct use of exhibits and provide encouragement and further information about the exhibits and the science behind them. Outreach activities involved presenting and assisting with delivery of ‘live’ science workshops/presentations at multiple nurseries for toddler and early years events.       This was a 3 week volunteer placement with Frontier to learn more about the work they undertake and the conservation efforts of cetaceans in the area. Skills learnt include: - Data collection & surveys of various species on tourist cetacean watching boats through visual & photo ID of dorsal fins - Coastal cliff walks to research Dolphins’ reliance on fish farms and behaviour- Weekly beach clean ups to remove rubbish and hazardous material- Following field briefs and writing daily summary reports- Working with others to collaborate research for resident individuals catalogue- Ecological survey’s in southern Tenerife to explore biodiversity in the area - Personal study of resident Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) in the region with interest into their diving and feeding behaviours.       This role is within the Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics project, focussing on marine samples from across the globe with symbiotic relationships. This ambitious project aims to generate reference level genomes for both host and symbiont(s) in combined sequencing.- Routine throughput of samples through upstream wet-lab processes, from dissection to nucleic acid purification, and preparation of extractions for submission to sequencing laboratories- Process optimisation, efficiencies and scaling with a focus of genomics R&D workDNA/RNA extraction, HiC, haplotagging and library preparation- Running and analysing multiple experiments, including using multiple kits/protocols in parallel and assessing their effectiveness Show less Research Assistant working in laboratories on the Wellcome Genome Campus- COVID-19 Genomics Initiative providing real-time genomic monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 in the UK to aid public health response. The team also monitors for genetic mutations which could cause the virus to be more easily transmitted or to escape vaccines. - DNA Pipelines project laboratory based role responsible for performingboth routine techniques in a high throughput environment and niche processes in a bespokeenvironment.
