  Design of hard- and software for an embedded, low power, data acquisition system for an autonomous measuring platform. The Dutch government needs to investigate continuously the coast protection and rivers. To evaluate simulation models they need real data. The data is collected with measuring platforms which are put into the water to measure turbidity, flow temperature etc. The system consists of dedicated measuring devices and an embedded PC104 system for control and storage of the data acquisition.   The major objective of this research project was to develop a new speed and position sensor less control technique for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor drive. A novel recursive speed and rotor position estimator will be devised. Comprehensive simulation studies will be carried out using Matlab/Simulink software. For optimizing the drive performance, accurate identification and precise tuning of the controller will be undertaken using Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Unscented Kalman Filter. A test platform that integrates the digital signal processor (DSP) based PMSM drive and data acquisition facilities will be implemented for conduction the experimental investigations and for verifying the simulation results.
