  Vacation Programme

  Vacation students were exposed to a top tier medium sized law firm. We were educated by the firm’s librarian to conduct research using the law library as well as Lexis Nexis. This programme also included visits to the firm’s offices situated in Pretoria, Bedfordview and Cape Town. I spent the duration of the programme working under Maurizio Mariano, one of the founding partners of the firm. I enjoyed visits to Advocate’s chambers with Mr Mariano as well the the unique opportunity to meet Kgalema Motlanthe, the former president of South Africa, one of BBM’s esteemed clients. Show less

  Vacation Programme

  Vacation students gained insight into daily life at one of Africa’s leading corporate commercial law firms. Senior directors made presentations on their areas of specialized practice and experience which informed students on the law from a practical perspective. We were privileged to visit the Magistrate’s Court, High Court and Constitutional Court situated in downtown Johannesburg. The vacation students had to submit a written assignment on a designated legal problem to display their abilities in legal research, drafting and reasoning. I spent my time working under Harold Jacobs, a Senior Litigator at Werksmans along with his associate at the time, Byron Nicol. Show less

  Wits Law Clinic Student Legal Advisor: Family Unit

  I was required to spend 2 hours per week in the Family Unit of the Wits Law Clinic consulting with clients under the supervision of Professor Stephen Tuson. I gained firsthand experience taking instructions and drafting basic legal correspondence and pleadings in family law matters. I worked mainly on divorce and custody matters. These matters were initiated in the appropriate courts and pursued to finality or are still pending. My time in the law clinic was extremely rewarding as I witnessed the wheels of social justice turning in the right direction. Show less
