Holmes lawson and associates loss assessors
Sept 1998 - May 1999Claims handlerMy duties at Holmes Lawson included both Domestic and Commercial claims handling, Customer Relations, Invoicing and issuing Fee Accounts. In this position I learned the basic principles of insurance and was able to make decisions based on the knowledge I had gained. A large proportion of my position involved liaising with other companies, such as Solicitors and Government offices, and with the Insured themselves. This was a good test of confidence for me, as dealing with large companies on behalf of a single customer was often a challenge. Show less

W i laing insurance brokers
Jun 1999 - May 2000Commercial assistantDuring my employment at W.I. Laing, I dealt with most aspects of insurance, including Commercial, Household, Renewals and giving quotes to prospective customers. Again, my position was very public relations based, often requiring a large amount of patience when trying to explain policy terms and conditions to the Insured. I also assisted with the daily claims handling for both the Commercial and Domestic department, liaising with the Insurer on policy liability and how most appropriate to proceed. During this time I dealt mostly with Property and Contents claims, but also gained some knowledge of Employers Liability and Public Liability claims. Show less

Capita insurance services (mclarens toplis chartered loss adjusters)
Jul 2000 - Jul 2001Commercial claims supervisorI worked within the Property department of McLarens Toplis main Service Centre in Birmingham. It was my job to deal with a number of commercial claims as well as overseeing the daily running of my team. My case load consisted of around 300 claims and included many different types of losses from a number of Insurers. The most common claims I dealt with on a daily basis were Buildings, Contents, Goods in Transit, Business Interruption, Stock, Money, Fine Art, Antiques, Motor Theft and some Liability cases. It was also my responsibility to calculate fees for each claim either by scale or hourly rate. I was responsible for overseeing five different schemes, each for a different Insurer. Part of my Supervisory role was to compile monthly Bordereau’s for each scheme and provide weekly statistic reports for the Branch Director showing team productivity. Show less

Giles insurance brokers (previously mcis)
Jul 2001 - Mar 2003Account brokerDuring my time at MCIS I dealt with a number of different classes of business with premiums ranging from £1,000 to £100,000. I was responsible for overseeing a group scheme arranged for the Mencap charity society. As MCIS are specialists in charity/not for profit organisations, this was a challenging position. I gained specialist knowledge in areas such as Medical Malpractice, which is not always a common feature in Broker positions. My caseload was around 300 on average and consisted mainly of carehomes and other similar not for profit organisations. This was an extremely interesting role, as charity’s requirements are very different from that of your mainstream client. Daily duties included everything from mid-term adjustments, daily servicing, invoicing, renewal negotiations, registers and policy checking. In addition to these duties I would be involved in both insurer meetings and client visits. Show less

Primary broker services
Mar 2003 - Sept 2003Assistant underwriterI entered this role believing it would be an interesting challenge and a positive career move. During my time with PBS I was mainly responsible for underwriting package business, which I must admit I found to be quite a step backwards and very dissatisfying. I dealt with restaurants, shops, hotels and similar package business. I quickly found that this was not the right move for me and that the position did not allow for my technical knowledge to be exploited.

Stanford and wood
Sept 2003 - Oct 2005Commercial account handlerDuring my time at Stanford & Wood I have dealt with premium income ranging from £1,000 to £300,000 across various classes of business. My daily duties include general servicing of accounts, mid-terms adjustments, new business, renewal negotiations, marketing, report writing and preparation, client visits insurer meetings, preparation of registers and policy checking. I am happy to say that during the these 2 years I was given the opportunity to build on my technical skills/knowledge and feel extremely confident in all negotiations/ discussions with both insurers and clients. My strength has been negotiations with insurers during a hard market. Show less

Marsh
Oct 2005 - Aug 2008Corporate client advisorMy role within Marsh is very similar to my previous roles, only on a much larger scale. I have a personal fee income of approximately £300,000 at present and this is made up across 10 accounts. The minimum fee income for any client is £15,000, with my personal maximum being around £70,000. One of the most important areas within my role is now compliance. Marsh has set extremely stringent internal regulations/standards, which must be adhered to in any event. Emphasis is very much on Contract Certainty and all staff have been fully trained to ensure that it is clear as to what is expected and the reason behind it. I now also work in a paperless environment, which takes some getting used to, but the aim is to utilize the technology that’s is available to us. This includes our new internet trading system, Eurotrade. All business is now transacted online with insurers. Given the complexity of some commercial insurances and the fact that each client has their own unique feature, this system is constantly evolving. Another feature of my role is to maintain and build relationships within the market. Although we work now with full transparency, it always helps to have a strong relationship with insurers. That area of the job will never change. Show less

Bainbridge collins
Oct 2008 - Mar 2010Account executiveThis role was a new challenge as it was mainly a client facing position. Whilst I had been in client facing roles previously, they had always been in a supporting capacity. This new role allowed me to build confidence. I was responsible for a client account of approximately £150K, however this was a complete broking role which involved being responsible for both the internal handling and the external client facing position. This meant that I was solely responsible for day to day queries, mid-term adjustments, renewal processes including writing client reports. It was also my job to negotiate fees / commissions in order to secure renewals. Show less

Towergate insurance
Mar 2010 - Apr 2013Commercial insurance brokerMy role at Towergate Insurance was a welcome return to more mid to corporate size accounts. Whilst there was an element of SME work involved, approximately 80% would be classed as Corporate. I worked within a small team of handlers for two Account Executives and two Account Directors; each with their on style. I therefore had to adapt my working processes to fit with each individual. My role was to act as the day to day contact for the client, dealing with any queries that arise, changes to cover and claims. I was responsible for any rebroking, which was mainly done direct with underwriters, but also included our online trading platform, PowerPlace for some of the more straight forward classes of business. It was my job to be fully up to date on compliance and to ensure that all procedures are followed as per Towergate requirements. This included writing renewal reports and ensuring that all TOBA’s and IDD’s were completed correctly and issued to the client within the set timescales. Show less
