      Tax manager

I was a Tax Manager for a large public accounting firm in Richmond, VA. My client base included individuals, flow-through entities, non-profit entities, and small and medium-sized businesses. I developed a diverse skill set from the general ledger, trust accounting, and tax work I did. I spent a significant amount of time on a project in which I developed the reconciliation process for a client, caught their account up, and then trained their staff to take over. I received awards for my mentoring and community service efforts, was active on the recruiting committee, and ran the intern program. Show less

      Client services manager

I was a manager for a small wealth management firm in Richmond, VA. The focus of this position was to perform or oversee tax, financial planning, and investment advisory services for my clients. Our client base included individuals, flow-through entities, non-profit entities, and small businesses. Here, I hired an independent contractor to build customized software to make our company run more efficiently. We worked together to design and build this software to meet the company's needs, improving efficiency and reducing errors. Show less

      Self employed

In an effort to transition from public accounting to the private sector, I partnered and worked with several companies to utilize and expand on my skillset, including the Riverstone Group and Steiner Business Solutions. My roles included serving as Tax and Accounting Manager, Director of Tax, and Controller/CFO for various clients. The experience and network I gained was invaluable, and during this time I discovered an interest in creating efficiencies and negotiating. My responsibilities included oversight of the entire tax function, serving businesses and individuals, working one-on-one with them on their tax planning and preparation needs. I also assisted with clients' accounting needs, acting as part-time controller or CFO. In that capacity, I helped oversee accounting departments/staff and processes, assisted with budgeting and decision-making, and/or provided reconciliation, review, and financial cleanup. Show less

      Jan 2011 - Jan 2014
      Chief financial officer

At OrthoVirginia, my responsibilities included Payroll, Employee Benefits, the Retirement Plan, Accounts Payable and Accounting/Finance among other things. I managed the transition of many vendor relationships, including the retirement plan vendor, our benefits advisors, the corporate banking relationship, management of printers and copiers, and the transition to The Payments Company. I also set us up on a company-wide GPO. My two major accomplishments included saving the company a significant amount of money each year and all of the improvements and efficiency I created through automation. Show less

    • Medarva

      Feb 2014 - May 2016
      Chief financial officer

At Medarva Stony Point Surgery Center my responsibilities included accounting and finance, front desk & registration, business office, payer contracting, materials management, IT, and risk management for the organization. I helped move us away from paper and onto a system to scan our charts, secured new facility and anesthesia contracts worth an extra $4 million over the next 3 years, turned around the accounting, business office, and materials management departments, and managed the transition of the banking relationship for all entities. Included in those efforts was the implementation of an anesthesia billing system and corresponding increase in profit of $500,000 per year, implementation of a new patient payment plan vendor with a corresponding cash infusion of $500,000 plus a reduction in bad debt expense of $127,000 in one year, implementation of an automated ordering system with bar-code scanning and GL interface, implementation of an accounts payable outsource system, and the complete refinance of our real estate debt with the removal of our SWAP. But my most exciting project was the launch of a Management Services Organization (MSO) with the successful onboarding of practice management for a 3-surgeon practice, including all management functions from business office to accounting.https://apadvantage.net/sites/53e4ea5be1fd7db474000002/content_entry544ffe71e1fd7db296001f25/544ffeade1fd7db296001f28/files/apa-case-study-stony-point.pdf Show less

      May 2016 - Feb 2018
      Practice administrator

At Atkins, Miller, Maestrello, & Associates, I was responsible for accounting and finance, human resources and payroll, leading monthly partner meetings, daily operations, and merger/acquisition, buy-ins, and other negotiations. Here I personally compiled all fee schedules and wrote a custom patient estimate calculator for the front desk, improving both collection efforts and patient satisfaction. I also transitioned the practice to Central Virginia Dental Care ownership, and as a result transitioned accounting and payroll systems twice, and transitioned our bank relationship to accommodate the new ownership structure. Additional accomplishments included creating and rolling out a new employee review system, doubling our line of credit, and upgrading the entire payroll function. Show less

    • Virginia physicians for women

      Mar 2018 - Feb 2019
      Director of finance

At VPFW, I was mainly responsible for the accounting and finance functions, as well as the business office functions (accounts receivable, billing, collections, and payer performance), and management of the physician bonus program. I also assisted the CEO with the real estate entity, and assisted Human Resources with the 401(k) plan administration. I was able to get us on to a GPO for an estimated $60k per year savings, implement Paymerang for an estimated $50k per year savings, and brought on a new collections attorney for $46k on old/uncollectible accounts as well as better performance on new accounts. I also added the following new products/offerings: Care Credit, Online Billpay, InstaMed, Zelis, and Honor Care - all improvements to the business office and the patient experience. Additionally, I inherited a large unclaimed property audit and successfully brought the audit to closure before my departure. My best accomplishment came in my quest to improve the physician bonus program, as I was able to develop a model to forecast revenues to predict the physician bonus pool for the first time ever in the practice.
