Crazy ant strike team x crew member

One of a crew of five sent to Johnston Atoll (an uninhabited 1 sq mi former military base) as the tenth six-month deployment of the Crazy Ant Strike Team (CAST) project, a USFWS effort to eradicate the yellow crazy ant (YCA), Anoplolepis gracilipes. YCA are a threat to the nesting seabirds on Johnston, in particular red-tailed tropicbirds, Phaeton rubricauda, of which Johnston hosts the world's largest breeding colony. YCA control methods tested in previous deployments, especially the application of hydrogel crystals soaked with sugar water and a concentration of insecticide (Dinotefuran), were implemented on a large scale. CAST X achieved a great reduction of the area in which YCA were dominant, allowing CAST XI to focus on targeted areas. In addition to YCA control, responsibilities included seabird nest monitoring, identification of ant species collected across the island, and weekly reef fish surveys. Show less
