Activities and Societies: Pioneer research on the genetic details of betanodavirus in India: • Conducted the first-ever molecular surveillance and phylogenetic grouping of betanodavirus, • Demonstrated through experiments that temperature can aggravate an asymptomatic betanodavirus infection into a clinical condition • Developed and patented an rt-PCR based molecular diagnostic assay and kit for the virus that outperformed commercial counterparts while reducing costs by 30%. • Best conference presentation award Thesis: "Betanodavirus in Fishes: Molecular Surveillance, Phylogenetics and Development of a Diagnostic Assay"

  • Experience

    • Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture

      Oct 2007 - Mar 2011
      Senior Research Fellow

      • Patented an rt-PCR-based molecular diagnostic assay and kit for betanodavirus that outperformed available commercial tests while reducing the cost by 30%. Produced a VLP vaccine for betanodavirus by cloning and expression of virus coat protein gene in E. coli.• Pioneer research discovered RGNNV as the prevalent species of betanodavirus in India. Unveiled new hosts and two new potential genotypes with surveillance and phylogenetic studies. • Demonstrated that elevated temperature aggravates asymptomatic betanodavirus infection in zebrafish pointing the potential impacts of global warming on aquaculture and fish health Show less

    • Sacred Heart College, Thevara

      May 2011 - May 2013
      Lecture

      • Followed ICT-enabled teaching in Aquaculture, Physiology and Pathology. Delivered cutting-edge education that fosters analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Promoted comprehensive and inclusive learning by student engagement in academic and other mentorship events• Mentored students and experimentally proved that the native fish Aplocheilus predated better on mosquito larvae than imported Gambusia and Poecilia species against the common perception • Developed a LAMP assay for betanodavirus requiring minimum technical skills and equipment only Show less

    • Central Marine Fisheries Reserarch Institute

      May 2013 - Oct 2018
      Senior Research Fellow

      • Described new Ceratomyxa and Tenuiproboscis parasites. Developed optimised protocols for their molecular diagnosis and fluorescent in-situ hybridization • Resolved phylogenetic ambiguities pertaining to some marine squids using molecular tools. • Helped marine mussel farmers in healthy sustainable farming practices and to improve their crop by recommending mitigation measures for unprecedented mass mortality. Prepared SOPs for crop management and disease surveillance. • Collaborated to establish aquatic animal disease surveillance laboratories equipped with high throughput PCR, microscopes, wet laboratory and scanning electron microscopy.
