  Born in Denver and raised in Mississippi, Joy Martin considers the mountains home and Durango, Colorado, basecamp. From 2003 till 2007, she earned a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Montana in Rural and Environmental Change (with an emphasis in Mountain Tourism and Adventure Travel in Kyrgyzstan), a degree she created from journalism, economics, sociology, art and language studies, and of course as much travel as possible. To aid the wanderlust, she started guiding backpacking and 'soft adventure' trips through the national parks of the Southwest in 2010. A travel writer joined her on one of these trips, a chance meeting that inspired Joy to pursue writing as a profession. Grammar and editing roots grew from copywriting trip itineraries for REI Adventures, Arizona Outback Adventures, Austin Adventures, The Explorers Passage, and Insight Cuba. These days, her projects range from writing articles for her hometown newspaper, the Durango Telegraph, to wielding blogs and website copy for companies like MeUndies, 360Durango, and Active Junky. She also contributes to high-altitude publications, such as the Climbing Zine and MTN Town Magazine. These motley experiences have provided her with resourcefulness, adaptability, and a couple of lifetimes worth of stories. While she's lived, worked and played in over 50 countries, Joy finds the most thrill from discovering gems in her own backyard of the San Juan Mountains by bike or skis with the man of her dreams, Nick Martin. Never short on inspiration or curiosity, Joy's greatest stress is that she can't do all the things all the time.
