In the tea industry, the labour shortage is a major concern. This project presented a design for a selective tea shoot harvesting machine that can be used in the low-country tea estates of Sri Lanka as a solution to the labour shortage. The project was done on a product design approach to arrive at the most feasible concept for the existing problem. Project approach: The concept design was created for visualisation and then the mathematical design process was conducted based on the model. A test bed was fabricated to obtain the shear force requirement for tea shoots which was the starting point of the design. The prototype will be developed in the future with plans for testing the prototype in tea fields. Ultimately, the end result was to create an efficient selective tea harvesting machine with advance features and a high factor of safety to ensure reliability and durability.Future work: Increase productivity by, increasing the shearing length (blade length) to harvest more green leaves per revolution, improve the design of the selection mechanism and improve the ergonomics of the machine. Also, increasing machine reliability by carrying out inspections and analyses on the machine (especially the moving parts) for a period of time (i.e. 3 months, 6 months) and carrying out necessary improvements will be conducted in the future.
