IGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition

Participation to the iGEM competition in 2018. Conception of a prototype (pipetting module, heating/cooling module, electronic card). The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is a worldwide synthetic biology competition. Every year, multidisciplinary teams devote a year to the conception of a system using genetically modified organisms to adress social issues. Originally created by the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the competition has grown to gather, every year in Boston, more than 5000 people from 316 different teams - around 44 different countries were prensent in 2018.The antibiotic resistance is nowadays one of the biggest threats to human health. It is estimated that if this trend goes on, in 2050, 10 millions people will die each year because of antibiotic resistance. In view of these alarming figures, my team and I decided to promote an alternative to antibiotics: phages therapy. We developed a prototype capable of testing bacteriophages to see if they are effective against a bacteria that infects a patient and that we are not capable of treating using common antibiotics. FILMARRAY® systems perform the extraction, amplification, and detection in a closed system. It is a syndromic testing system for a variety of pathogens associated with key healthcare concerns. To help with the design of the pouch and to better understand the PCR results, a Multiplex PCR model is developed.Les systèmes FILMARRAY® permettent une approche syndromique de la détection de pathogènes. Afin d'aider au design de nouveaux panels de détection, un modèle de PCR Multiplexe est développé Voir moins
