Lewis Honors College StudentI am a full time student and Presidential Scholar at UK. I am a biology major and am in the Lewis Honors College. I have a rigorous course load, as I am on the pre-medicine pathway. I enjoy the challenge of balancing this course load with that of work. This began as a challenge, in which I have grown stronger as a student and person as I developed my time management skills.

UK Football Student Sports Medicine/Athletic Training Aide

I worked with team doctors and head athletic trainers in order to provide adequate health care to the student athletes of the UK football team. I have traveled the country with the team, providing rehabilitation, injury prevention and treatment, first aid treatment, covid testing, and other healthcare needs surrounding the athletes. I typically worked 35-40+ hours per week(around 2,000 total hours) at the facility and traveled with the team during the football season. I was responsible for my work at this establishment while maintaining a status as a full time biology student at the university. I gained experience working with others, patients, and doctors, thus furthering my interest and devotion to the field of medicine. Show less

    • Baptist Health System KY & IN

      May 2022 - Jul 2022
      Pre-Med Academy

During the summer of 2022, I worked at Baptist Health in Paducah, KY as a Pre-Med Intern. I would work around 30 hours a week shadowing, interacting, scrubbing into surgeries, conversing with patients, and learning about nearly every aspect of the hospital. I shadowed several different specialties, from family medicine to neurosurgery, all of which provided valuable insight into my future in the field of medicine. This internship solidified my decision to pursue a career in medicine, for every day was filled with a new experience and I was able to work alongside the doctors as they restored their patient’s quality of life. • HealthCare Cats

      Jul 2022 - now
      HealthCare Cats President and Co-Founder

I currently serve as the president of HealthCare Cats. We are an official University of Kentucky organization with the mission, “Providing an avenue into college and healthcare opportunities for rural students of Kentucky in order to create a better Commonwealth.” Coming from a small and rural Kentucky town, I felt behind coming to a university with aspirations to obtain a doctorate. In order to assure this isn’t the feeling of other rural students, we created HCC. We visit rural high schools in Kentucky and present on foundational academic habits and opportunities in healthcare at UKY. We host guest speakers, networking events, and have a mentorship program for incoming rural students. We hope to encourage students to come to the University of Kentucky and then return and practice in their hometowns. Show less

I hope this will allow me to help future students in the area where I am most passionate.

    • Lewis Honors College

      Jan 2023 - now

I was appointed to the SPLIT team in January of 2023 and was further appointed to the “Quality of faculty and staff/quality of curriculum” section of the LHC vision. The vision/mission statement/strategic plan of the LHC is at the forefront of their focus. Being a rather new college (2015), the plan of the college heading forward is of utmost importance. I am one of the 4 undergraduate students that were appointed (one for each of the 4 subsections of the strategic plan). I am able to voice my opinions and help draft the strategic plan of the college with the deans and faculty. Show less

      Research Assistant

My research is in the lab of Dr. David Rodgers. Dr. Rodgers is a faculty member in the basic sciences department in the College of Medicine. (Biochemistry) The focus of our work is understanding the basis for enzyme catalysis and developing the ability to manipulate macromolecules for the treatment of diseases and other practical applications. Insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) cleaves bioactive peptides to stop or modify their activity. In particular, it is believed to be responsible for degrading the hormone insulin and to contribute to degradation of the amyloid beta peptide that causes Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Rodgers’ lab has shown recently that IDE can bind to a particular group of lipid molecules, phosphatidylinositol phosphates (PIPs), in two different ways. It can interact with the hydrophilic portions of the lipids when they form part of a cellular membrane, and it can also bind entire lipids in a large internal chamber that normally accommodates peptide substrates. This finding raised the possibility that IDE might have a second function in transporting PIP lipids between different membranes in the cell. I hypothesize that IDE can act as a lipid transport protein, and my work in the lab will attempt to test this hypothesis. Show less

      Jun 2023 - Jul 2023
Area Health Education Center Camp Mentor/Advisor

I served as an advisor and mentor to the 40 students from across the Commonwealth that attended the UK College of Medicine Center for Intraprofessional and Community Health Education summer camps. The two camps were the Summer Enrichment Program and the Health Researchers Youth Academy. I was able to present to the students about UK, live in the dorm with them, and mentor them through the process of becoming a pre-health professional.
