I worked with Dr. Peter Loutzenhiser and Dr. Devesh Ranjan on characterizing granular flows at high temperatures. Activities and accomplishments include:•Developed 3D numerical simulations that predicted the flow behavior particle flows using the discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) •Reduced computational time of high process parallel computing (HPPC) numerical simulations by a factor of 19 using C++, git, and MPI on a Linux workstation•Numerical model verification and validation performed using experimental flow results. Experimental particle flow behavior optimized using developed numerical models•Developed radiative heat transfer numerical simulations using central differencing schemes, 2nd and 3rd order upwind schemes and a tri-diagonal matrix algorithm (TDMA)•Designed and manufactured experimental infrastructure that characterized particle material properties at temperatures up to 800°C•Characterized mechanical properties of particulate media using tensile, impulse-excitation, particle impact and frictional tests at temperatures up to 800°C•Incorporated material-specific, mechanical properties of particulates in flow simulations to increase the accuracy of predicted flow behavior•Expanded signal processing programs in LabView, enabling robust control of experimental systems•Automated image processing in MATLAB, reducing data processing time by 86% Weniger anzeigen
