    • Centre for Telehealth, University of Hull

      Aug 2006 - Jul 2015

I managed all aspects of the creation, development and delivery of the Centre for Telehealth as an interdisciplinary research, enterprise, and education group. The Centre was dedicated to applying new technologies to deliver integrated care services, including telehealth, telemedicine, telecare and mHealth. The group consisted of 42 academics in nursing, health, medicine, computer science, engineering and chemistry. I secured the initial budget of £1.2M, and delivered on all operational and strategic aspects of the Centre, from specifying roles to building an extensive network of partnerships, contacts and projects with industry, public sector and the third sector.Primary objective was research impact, which I achieved through a strategy of aligning activity with the direct needs of external partners. This included ensuring the University continued to support the transition of earlier University-led research projects into new NHS telehealth services in Hull. These services are now mainstreamed within Hull and support over 500 patients with heart failure or COPD at any one time. The Centre delivered nearly £3M of research and consultancy, and we achieved 44 references to telehealth in the University of Hull Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 submission, including two impact case studies.Beyond management of individual research and enterprise projects, I also had responsibility for a number of core functions, including: 1) Business forecasting and planning, including internal and company business plans for industrial partners. 2) Risk management, budgeting and finance, including management of budget variations. 3) HR, including identification of need, specification of roles, interviewing and liaising with appointees.4) Liaison and communication, both internal and external, up to CEO level, including contract negotiation5) Analysis of complex data, including performance metrics, research data, market analysis and report writing. Show less Managed delivery of the initial pump-priming project, which subsequently successfully progressed to become the Centre for Telehealth. This included all project management roles for a large interdisciplinary project (c£250K). Tasks including creation of planning documentation, reporting and communication, budgeting, risk, management, all client and faculty interaction as well as management of multiple sub-projects (i.e. individual research and enterprise projects). This role also included sourcing, negotiating and contracting with external businesses and public sector clients. Show less A progression of the previous business associate role, as reach out coordinator I reported to Director of the Postgraduate Medical Institute, and became more heavily involved in the evaluation and development of opportunities as well as liaison. This included drafting business plans, contributing to research and KTP applications, ensuring delivery of contracts and identifying new opportunities. This also included cold-calling companies to build collaborations. The role was split part-time with my NHS Clinical Scientist role. Show less
