      Apr 2014 - Apr 2016
      English Teacher

I loved teaching classes in both English and Japanese to students of all ages, from middle-schoolers to those in their 80s. I prepared class materials, proofread documents, and translated pages from English to Japanese and vice versa. I illustrated class materials and designed the school's PR postcards. It was exciting to work with coworkers who had come to Japan from around the world, and it was wonderful to teach self-motivated students who all wanted to get better at speaking English.

      Apr 2018 - Jul 2019
      Keyholder

I was promoted from Associate to a temporary Keyholder position in October 2018 to assist with management during the holidays and during a change of store director. My main role was assisting customers in fitting rooms and at cash register, but I also directed associates, opened and closed the store, and logged detailed financial reports at the beginning and end of the day. My favorite part of this work was helping people find something that they felt good in and gave them confidence!

      May 2018 - Jul 2019
      Retail Sales Supervisor

I was promoted from Associate to Supervisor at Paper Source within 2 months. I directed employee shifts, headed workshop organization, and opened and closed the store, which included logging financial records. I also did consultations with customers for custom print wedding invitation orders and taught weekly crafting classes to customers of all ages, including very young kids in our "summer camp" series. My coworkers and I enjoyed finding ways to be creative during our time together.

    • Cloche Coffee

      Oct 2019 - May 2021
      Barista

I thoroughly enjoyed working at Cloche's physical location in Durham as well as on their coffee truck, which traveled the Triangle area and catered events. I loved talking with regulars; at the time, I kept a list on my phone of my regular's names and orders so that I could memorize it. I enjoyed learning new skills from my coworkers (like how to pour foam designs on a latte), and I felt especially grateful to the owner, who let me work on her truck even after Covid-19 made me worried about coming to the shop. As a woman-owned, woman-run business, I felt I had a lot to learn from Cloche and its owner, Ashleigh. Show less

      Pet Adoption Counselor

I provide adoption counseling and customer service support for visitors and adopters. As a nonprofit, we also provide community support (such as through our pet food assistance program), education, and outreach. Oftentimes I field calls from Durham residents who are experiencing an emergency with their pet, whether it's a housing crisis or a veterinary emergency. I feel gratified that I am able to provide direction and support in those times.
