Service Overview: As an ACLO (Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer) for the Department of Education (DoE), I link families and schools to different services in their communities for Aboriginal families. Part of our role is to help schools and families with policies and workshops for school staff to help them learn Aboriginal Culture. As part of an Aboriginal education team, we deliver cultural workshops to school staff and their communities. In my role, I:`Support families / schools who need help in protocols or support Aboriginal families when they need help in the education system eg, understanding a school’s policy. Act as a conduit between local principals and regional staff on the views of Aboriginal communities, including the local AECG, which have relevance for the Aboriginal students in schools and the Aboriginal education programs.`Promote an understanding between the department and Aboriginal communities as well as promoting AECG at a local, regional and state level. `Assist other staff from schools or other agencies to develop awareness of Aboriginal health issues that impact on outcomes for Aboriginal students.`Assist to build the capacity of Aboriginal community members and departmental officers in Aboriginal education curriculum development and implementation.`Assist departmental staff, and when required staff from other agencies, to develop awareness of Aboriginal health issues that impact on outcomes for Aboriginal students.Sometimes inter-agencies do overlap with helping families, so knowing who to approach when the families ask me for help and knowing what services are available in this area as to benefit families / schools will make a difference. If we can work together, we can make a difference. My main area of coverage is from Maitland up to the north coast border and inland to New England Area. I am part of Educational Services Team 3. I am also President of the Korreil Wonnai (Cessnock/Kurri Kurri) AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group) which is a volunteer organisation which helps families / communities with their children’s education in the Cessnock / Kurri Kurri area. We meet at least once a term and we have a partnership with the DoE and private schools to help Aboriginal families with Educational needs. The AECG gives Aboriginal people a voice at a Local level & takes their views State wide. The strength of the AECG depends on the participation of all concerned i.e.; Education Department, Schools, Teachers, Parents, Students, Aboriginal Organisations & the wider community. The AECG is an Aboriginal community based organisation made up of volunteer members who are involved in Junior, Local, Regional & State AECG’s throughout NSW. The AECG is recognised as the principle source of advice on behalf of Aboriginal communities on issues relating to Education. We want to empower our communities to become involved in all levels of Education i.e.; Pre School, Kindergarten, Primary, Secondary, TAFE, UNI. The AECG’s focus is on communities having input into Aboriginal Education at all levels. This will empower our people & will contribute to improving all outcomes for everyone. Show less
