      Arrest Referral Worker

This role focussed on the assessment and case-management of offenders who had been found to be using Class A drugs. Based within a custody suite at a busy West Midlands Police station involved reacting calmly to often pressurised environments. Arrest Referral Workers operate under the ethos that drugs and crime are directly related and work towards breaking this cycle by providing a gateway service enabling offenders to access treatment for their drug addiction. My role involved referring to and liaising with multiple agencies and often involved following a client completely through the judicial system. Due to the ambivalence often displayed by drug users, a large majority of my work involved motivational enhancement to encourage clients to identify and deal with their drug problem. Show less

    • Drug Solutions Birmingham (Swanswell Charitable Trust)

      Mar 2007 - Apr 2008
      Shared Care Drug Worker

This role involved working alongside General Practitioners to provide both pharmacological and psychological support to substance misuse clients who have entered into treatment for drug addiction. The majority of my work involved supporting individuals receiving methadone maintenance therapy or opiate substitute prescribing with psycho-social interventions, which help clients to identify, challenge and change their drug-related behaviour. This role had an eclectic therapeutic nature, utilising a number of different techniques to help clients tackle their addictive behaviours. I have experience of using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing & Solution Focused Therapy on a day-to-day basis with individual clients. This role frequently involved working with dual diagnosis, where clients presented with co-morbid conditions such as mental health problems exacerbated by substance misuse. The role therefore often involved managing clients with two potentially chaotic conditions intertwined. Show less
