My 2-year long research assistant position with Professor Timur Kuran applied quantitative analysis and geographic visualization to investigate how pre-modern Instanbul's legal and social structures affected the development of the city's diverse demographic groups. • Self-Help Credit Union

      May 2017 - now

Self-Help Credit Union is a mission-driven credit union, as well as a community development financial organization (CDFI) with central teams focused on large economic development projects. My position with Self-Help is on the Commercial Lending Team, a team of roughly 25 people that originates loans for development projects in primarily low-income areas. Our team provides technical assistance and direct lending primarily to clients working in the sectors of: Healthy Food Systems, Faith, Low- to Moderate- Income Housing, Healthcare, Community Development Facilities, (mission-aligned) Charter Schools, and Commercial Real Estate. My Special Project Manager role on the Commercial Lending team is outside of the loan origination process, although I do have experience as a loan officer. I primarily work to improve our processes and operations, data systems, and loan products. My role involves intimate knowledge of nCino (a Salesforce-adjacent program) for loan origination, Excel modeling for financial analysis, and Microsoft Power-BI for data visualization. Show less In the summer of 2017 during my graduate studies at Duke, and prior to my full-time employment at Self-Help in the spring of 2018, I was an intern for the Self-Help Commercial Lending Team's charter school sector. During this internship, I was primarily responsible for helping the sector develop a racial equity lens for its charter school lending, in addition to helping the sector examine its loan portfolio and other miscellaneous tasks. The development of a more robust racial equity lens involved interviewing consultants and eventually hiring consultants to help our CDFI develop more explicit lending guidelines and support systems for the prospective mission-aligned charter schools with whom we work. This work continued past the summer (part-time while I completed my graduate degree) and ended with my full-time employment on the Commercial Lending team. Show less
