    • Hayward Unified School District

      Aug 2006 - now

Oversaw the largest department in the school district (approximately 300 staff members); Ensured the district provided high quality before & afterschool programming for students; Developed a catalog of before/after school programs that emphasized engineering & technology, physical fitness & recreation, culture enrichment & awareness, visual & performing arts, social emotional learning and academic intervention; Constructed the district’s multi-tiered system of support in the areas of literacy, numeracy and social emotional learning; Ensured staff received trauma-informed training and professional development that reinforced the district’s restorative practices and anti-bias/anti-racism policies; Coordinated support services for students (including counseling, behavior therapy, academic intervention, etc.); Wrote, managed and reported on several grants totaling approximately $15,000,000. Show less Prior to being promoted to a directorship I was an elementary principal for ten years. As a site administrator, I set the school’s agenda, collaborating with teachers and the parent community to create the school’s Single Plan for Student Achievement. As the instructional leader, I ensured that the school’s vision and goals were aligned with the school plan and budget. My foci as a site administrator has always been to foster a welcoming environment for parents, students, teachers, and all other stakeholders – while establishing classroom/instructional norms to improve student achievement. I served as the Principal of Fairview Elementary School from 2019 to 2021. At Fairview, I was able to galvanize the staff and provide stability after the school suffered seven years of constant administrative turnover. I lifted morale while guiding the community through the challenges of the pandemic and reopening of the school site. As a collective, we aligned our stakeholder groups in ways, in which they worked cohesively with one another. As a unified staff, we were able to establish a comprehensive 3-year strategic plan that provided clear guidance and direction regarding instructional foci, support services and budget alignment with our school and district initiatives. Show less In my eight years as the principal of Southgate Elementary School, we developed a tradition of being one of the top schools in the district. When I was appointed as the principal of Southgate Elementary School in 2011, Southgate was rated as the #7 school out of 31 schools in the district based upon API scores. But by the end of my first school-year we moved to #3, then vaulted to the #1 rated school by my fifth year at the helm, ranking as the highest performing school in the district in both ELA and Math. Southgate’s academic acumen continued to ascend, boasting some of the highest levels of growth over a three-year span in the state. Since the onset of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, in 2015, Southgate Elementary School grew 22 percentage points in English Language Arts (38% to 60%) and 22% in Math (35% to 57%). These great gains earned Southgate recognition as a California Distinguished School in 2017 and 2019. As the principal of Southgate I fostered a culture that took great pride in supporting students who are traditionally deemed as “underserved.” In 2016 and 2017 Southgate was honored by the publication Innovative Public Schools. Out of 1,251 schools in the Bay Area, Innovative Public Schools documented that only 47 schools met or exceeded the standards on the CAASPP for “underserved” students – Southgate was one of those schools. When taking a deeper dive into the data Southgate was rated the 6th highest performing school for African American students out of 1,251 Bay Area Schools. In 2018, Innovative Public Schools honored Southgate as one of only two schools that received “TOP SCHOOL” recognition for Hispanic American and African American students in both English Language Arts and Math. Show less As the Assistant Principal of Dr. Martin Luther King Middle School I oversaw the greatest API score improvement in school history, improving 44 points in one school-year. Under my supervision the school reached Safe Harbor status in 2010. King’s progress was due to a keen focus on improving direct instruction, mandating 100% student engagement, increasing the use of technology/media in the classroom, and the implementation of teaching test-taking strategies throughout the school-day. At King, I was an intricate part of a culture shift that exponentially increased the intrinsic motivation of the students on campus. Working diligently with the principal and staff, we increased the level of school spirit tremendously. The increased school spirit cultivated a family-oriented environment in which the students behaved and performed in the classroom, not just for themselves, but for each other. The cultivation of a college-going culture boosted the morale of the students, teachers and the community – which directly correlated to the increase in student achievement. Show less As a special education teacher I led professional development trainings, coached veteran colleagues, mentored new teachers, supported classroom instruction, ensured the adherence/compliance of Individual Educational Plans, and conducted formal/informal walkthrough observations with principals. I also was an intricate part of the development of common academic language, behavior modification strategies, positive climate development, and team building. Working with students with special needs, I proved to have the ability to identify areas of concern and develop clear plans to address specific student needs. I demonstrated the ability to write effective, concise, and easy to follow IEPs and behavior plans. I supported my general education colleagues to ensure they exhausted all areas of RTI (Response to Intervention) prior to referring students to special education. My work as a special educator strengthened my in-depth knowledge of instructional best practices, the California Educational Code and Parent/Students Rights. Show less
