      Resident Assistant

My primary duty as an RA is to be an on-site assistant to the residents of my floor. My purpose is to be available to answer questions, provide directions, give informal advice, and mediate conflicts. I am directed to develop good interpersonal relationships with those on my floor who willingly reciprocate my efforts and simply make a continual effort to keep those residents who prefer their privacy informed of goings-on on the floor. Two of my most important duties are weekly floor events and bi-weekly All-Hall events. Floor events are social events I arrange with as many of my residents as can attend to get everyone together, with an eye towards building a stronger floor community. All-Hall events are larger, collaborative events in which I participate with a team of RAs to bring together as many residents as possible in our dormitory complex in order to promote inter-floor social interaction. We are given a firm budget of 100 dollars and an edict that each All-Hall must be unique. My final duties include monitoring the hall for safety, enforcing housing rules, checking to make sure no resident is going through any major personal or educational difficulties without being offered help, and doing a full twelve duty nights in which I and another RA walk through all the halls at least twice in a night, interact with residents, check for damages, and keep an eye out for any violations of dorm rules. As an RA, I am considered the first resource for any resident on my floor with any difficulties. (Supervisor: Carmen Binder. Phone: 402-472-5346) Show less
