  While attending college, my specific experience outside typical classwork was volunteering to aid in research on optimizing the habitats and media of algae in the ponds of West Texas and New Mexico. Our task was to research and identify a bacterial predator that was proliferating in the tanks and consuming algal cells thus increasing the cost of upkeep. The working resolution was to simply add bleach to the media which worked, but damaged the algae as well. Utilizing PCR to identify the bacteria, as well as spectrophotometry, and manipulating levels of nutrients in media with Copper, Methylene blue, and other varieties of solution to both destroy the bacterial population, and promote growth of the Algae. Copper 2 Sulfate was found to be the best candidate for the job. I hope to assist in further research of algae as I believe it is going to influence our global economy much more in the very near future. Show less
