      Sept 2006 - May 2008

Under the guidance of Michelle Mynlieff, PhD, I examined the regulated expression of hippocampal chloride transporters thought to underlie GABA's switch in function from an excitatory to inhibitory neurotransmitter. NKCC1 and KCC2 expression were examined through Western blot analysis, a BCA protein assay and SDS-PAGE. Hippocampal dissections were performed in neonatal rats. My work with this project started as part of an undergraduate summer research project and continued as an Independent Study course until my graduation from Marquette. It was through this project that I earned a Research Award for Biochemistry Majors from Marquette's Biological Sciences department in May 2008. Show less

      Bioethics Intern

I conducted research on advance directive issuance and drafted a pilot study to determine: (1) the prevalence of advance directives within the Milwaukee area and (2) how knowledge of the Terri Schiavo case affected completion of advance directives. Bioethicists believe that knowledge of the Terri Schiavo case may have encouraged the general public to complete advance directives, outlining wishes for end-of-life care. Our goal was to determine if a correlation exists between knowledge of the Terri Schiavo case and completion of advance directives in Milwaukee, WI. Show less

    • Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

      Sept 2011 - Dec 2017

I worked closely with software developers and users to support the (open-source) biobank management software application used across the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Performed functional testing, configured the application based on user needs, and trained users.I actively contributed to the software’s public forum, which is used collaboratively with other institutions to share and clarify use cases, to propose new features and enhancements, to report bugs, and to organize conferences. In December 2014, I presented Johns Hopkins’ adoption of the application at its annual User Group Meeting. It was fun to see a biobank software pilot program expand from managing one freezer to enterprise adoption. Show less We established a biorepository from the ground up, starting with one freezer, while piloting an open source biobank management software application. We demonstrated that the application could support biobanking efforts for a clinical division. The application was later adopted for enterprise use at Johns Hopkins University. I collected, processed, and organized biospecimens used for research. I trained new users, and worked with the IT department to define use cases, report bugs, and propose enhancements. I migrated 80,000+ specimens and related data to the application. Collectively, efforts in the biobank led to 70+ publications. I studied part-time to earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, which included a Certificate in Public Health Informatics. Show less
