    • Diabetes Health Magazine

      Jan 1990 - Aug 2013
      Founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher

We were called the "Rolling Stone" magazine for diabetes. Launched a successful print magazine, radio show and website with over 5,000 articles and videos about diabetes and its treatment. We maintained a growing list of subscribers and healthcare professionals who received the magazine. As there was no 'off the shelf' product to handle our list, I bought Filemaker Pro and built it myself. This database tracked our 90,000 subscribers and even printed out the sequenced billing letters. Each month I had to manipulate the data using Boolean logic (using and, or, and not) to print the mailing labels. We tracked all kinds of data points with our custom Filemaker database — renewals, free offers, paid/not paid, and demographic information. We also tracked our advertisers, sales, number of calls, advertisements placed, future insertions, mailings and their billing cycles. One of the many innovative programs I started was to ship boxes of our magazines to healthcare professionals who would distribute them in their health education classes, increasing readership for our advertisers. I was also in charge of hiring, training and organizing a staff of 12 people. Through good communication skills, handling multiple tasks, and running it efficiently, we kept the magazine on schedule, and on budget! My team produced an 80-page magazine each month, and everything had to be on time. I also was in-charge of accounting, the profit and loss statements, cost control, and budgeting. Through regular meetings identifying staff priorities, we were able to produce the magazine in 20 days instead of 30. This allowed the staff time for extra projects like producing marketing materials. I handled multiple tasks well — besides running six departments, I wrote a regular column and spoke publicly for Kaiser Permanente and other groups. I was hired to speak at many health fairs and conferences locally and internationally, including Guam, Italy and England. Show less

    • Dancing Fire Pottery

      Apr 2016 - now
      Head Potter / Owner

You might know me as Scotty King, but I’m actually a descendent from a long line of potters. My grandmother started my ceramic training at 9 years old getting me on her potters wheel in her large kitchen. I kept throwing pots right into college and studied under master potter and Sacramento icon Ruth Rippon. Then I switched to mathematics and later diabetes. Now, 50 years later, I’m back at the wheel and loving it. And I have some very good news. My business handcrafts one-of-a-kind pieces for clients wanting to honor their beloved. Most of my current customers are horse owners. They mail me hair from their beloved horse which gets fired and the vessel walls are then seeded with the horse’s DNA (see photos below). We take some essence of something quite temporary (hair from your beloved), and handcraft a work of art that can last forever. You can take delivery of a timeless treasure that is seeded with DNA from your beloved. The bonus is that it creates a beautiful and random artistic design. Clients sometimes report ‘seeing’ images they recognize in the vessels they receive from me. They also report being profoundly affected and pleased by holding and feeling the clay vessel adorned with the name of their beloved carved underneath. Many have written me to share how they were moved to tears.“My daughter absolutely LOVED her vessel and jewelry! She actually cried and said best gift ever! 🙂 — J. Cullen“Jeff loved it! He keeps both on his nightstand. Your package was a huge part in helping him cope during this tough time for him. “—Mike (Jeff’s dad)Each hand-thrown clay vessel is lovingly adorned using this unique firing process with hair from your beloved (horse, dog, cat, pet or partner/parent/child). The name you wish to honor is carved underneath. My dream is to create 1000’s of “Touchstones of Love,” handcrafted clay creations creating a heart-space where my clients can deeply feel the depth of their love remembering their beloved. —Scotty King Show less
