Project title: Investigation of the ability of collagen IV in the enhancement of neuronal cell growthMy project focussed on the effect of different biomaterial surfaces on the adsorption and subsequent functionality with respect to cell attachment and proliferation of the extra cellular matrix protein collagen IV. Quantification studies for the adsorption of collagen IV on biomaterial surfaces glass, PLLA and acrylic acid using ELISA showed that there was no significant difference in the adsorption of collagen IV among the surfaces investigated. F-actin staining studies using confocal microscopy in NG-108 cells indicated that there was no appreciable difference in the attachment of cells on the different surfaces. Also, the dependence of cell attachment on beta1 integrin, a high affinity receptor for collagen IV was investigated by integrin blocking studies. This study implicated the role of beta-1 integrin on cell attachment. The cell number analysis studies suggested that collagen IV coating had no significant effect on cell proliferation. Show less
