      Hydrogels are hydrophilic polymers which have shown wide range of applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, agriculture and hygienic products. In the current work, we first developed a three-dimensional mixed hybrid model for a swelling ionized hydrogel in MATLAB. The proposed numerical model was then evaluated in swelling simulations especially when (extremely) large deformations were involved. Complex buckling patterns were observed in the simulations. At last, a full-round comparison with the existing method (standard FEM) was carried out. We conclude that the mixed hybrid model exhibits significant advantages over standard FEM in terms of accuracy in calculation of transient deformation and flux fields especially when the domain is heterogeneous with a discontinuous interface in permeability.
