CIWM James Jackson Award 2015 The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) Nov 2015 The research paper won the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) James Jackson Award, which recognises the best formal written paper on the topic of waste management. The award-winning paper introduces a valuable set of indicators to quantify the way cities manage their solid wastes. It has already been applied to 40 sites around the world, making it the most complete set available world-wide. Also received the ISWA Publication Award 2015. (See, on page 8: www.leeds.ac.uk/forstaff/download/1162/)PaCE brings together a group of academics focusing on public was academics focusing on public health and environmental engineering. Sustainability not only runs through the research, but also the way laboratory facilities are managed in the institute. Rather than the traditional academic approach of each lab belonging to a particular academic or group, PaCE have pioneered the management of shared labs across the institute. Labs are managed by the lead technician, Karen Stevens, with a experimentally focused academic staff responsible for particular areas, two technicians leading day to day management, key decisions taken by all staff at institute meetings and ultimate responsibility, including H&S, resting with the institute director. Recently PaCE have extended this approach outside the institute, developing a new lab space for “Resource Recovery from Waste” research in the Engineering Building. This is under the responsibility of Dr Costas Velis, run by PaCE technicians, and shared with academics and researchers in SPEME. This is enabling new research collaborations, better use of equipment and technician resources, better use of space and better management of the lab environment. Key to this sustainable way of working is an open and collaborative research culture within the institute and support from all institute members. Show less
