    • Atos (Formerly Atos Origin)

      Jan 2002 - Jan 2003
      Technical Consultant Unix Oracle

Project Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND)Providing technical assistance to a senior government supplier of IT services in order to help facilitate the smooth transfer of operational responsibility from outgoing supplier Siemens Business Systems.Responsibilities included following ATOS procedures, which were based on Prince2, and ITIL. Obtain SC Security clearance. Interviewed members of the incumbent team in order to document operational procedures for all key applications. Stakeholder engagement, project planning, scheduling, operational testing, systems administration. It's always difficult walking into a situation where the team know the company they are working for has lost the contract. Being emotionally sensitive and engaging with the team, I believe I helped to reduce the attrition that might have otherwise have occurred if they had not been sufficiently engaged. Another area I was able to add value was by introducing a technical wiki to the project. When the incumbent supplier left they took their IT systems with them and thus nearly all the operational documentation. Show less

    • Sun Microsystems

      Jan 2003 - Jan 2004

Duties included Solaris systems administration, ksh and Perl scripting; F15K systems administration; managing backups with Legato Networker. Day-to-day duties included, creating F12K domains, using dynamic-reconfiguration to move system boards from one domain to another and configuring IO accordingly. Other experience gained on this project included Solaris 10 pre-release. Researched into both the technical benefits and the business case for using N1 grid containers/zones as an alternative to domains. During this contract successfully set up a J2EE application infrastucture based on cloning multiple instances of Weblogic Application Server into a ring fenced environment using Solaris 10's Zone features. Other responsibilities included writing RMAN scripts backing up and recovering Oracle databases as well as running Stats Pack in order to monitor performance of the Oracle 8i database. Show less

    • Visa Europe

      Jan 2006 - Jan 2008
      Technical Consultant

Project Visa Money Transfer VMTWorking on behalf of the Customer in a Prince2 environment. My role in this position was to plan and implement a program of software upgrades. VMT is a bespoke multi-tiered Web-Facing application to enable banks to offer the facility to transfer money using their payment cards to just about anywhere in the world using BASE1, BASE2 and SWIFT messaging. The main deliverables for this position were: a WBS, Schedule, risk assessment, action plan and the implementation of the changes which included upgrading Solaris from V8-10, Oracle RAC from 9i to 10g, Upgrading Web Logic from V7-V8 and deploying the upgrade which was written by a third party into the new environment. This work required me to engage regularly with all kinds of stakeholders including: the BA, Project Executive, Product Owner, Security, Application Support, SAs, DBAs, Risk Management and technology Vendors; and to conclude the project to a successful outcome.Another area I was able to add value was by fixing a bug in a piece of third party code which had caused the daily batch schedule to fail and required a manual work around. This fix saved 1.5 operational man-hours per day bringing which equates to £54,000 per year including overtime. More information about my previous engagements can be found on Linked In. Show less

    • Alcatel-Lucent

      May 2008 - Jan 2009
      Technical Consultant Oracle, Weblogic, Solaris

Project Orange Broadband ProvisioningWorking for a senior supplier in a Prince2 and ITIL environment. The project was delivered using a Waterfall SDLC and exhibited many of the problems associated with predictive life-cycles. The solution was a distributed COTS application called AXIOS. The provisioning requests were sent from Orange’s CRM by via XML based Web Services. The system was built around a number of technologies including Web Logic Integrator WLI, Oracle, Veritas Cluster Server and was deployed into a Solaris Environment. My role in this project was to identify and fix problems previously overlooked and to reduce their impact on our KPIs. For instance, one very simply change to an XML file removed a backlog of 360 service requests that had previously had to be processed by a manual work around. This saved hundreds of man-hours. • Cubic Transport Services Limited

      Jan 2009 - Jan 2010
      Oracle and Unix Consultant

Project Transport for LondonThis role was predominantly technical. It involved planning a hardware and software upgrade of a VLDB system providing back office support for the whole of the London Transport Hub and South West Trains. The System processes in excess of 24 million transactions per day and is critical to the operation. The job involved collaborating between the various internal stakeholders including: Development, IT, Application Support, Engineering and external Contractors and sitting in on Scrum meetings.Other responsibilities included building the platforms on Sun hardware, installing, patching and building a Stretched 20KM Cluster based on VCS. With the database being so large (>15tb) one of the biggest challenges was getting it migrated to the new system and the mirrors fully synced before cutover to the new system. The solution required us to upgrade the legacy database to 11g first and use some of the advanced features of Oracle Data Guard to replicate the data between the old and new systems. I was instrumental in identifying the risks, evaluating the options and presenting them to the Senior stakeholders and for planning the work and base lining the schedule. Another area I was able to add value was by making a fairly simple change to one of the overnight batch schedules that reduced the run-time from by 6 hours. This gave us extra bandwidth in meeting KPIs. Show less
