  I worked in Dr MacDonald's lab on a study involving the quantification of the EZ area in patients with choroideremia. My major role involved segmenting OCT scans to measure EZ area and collating data.Dr MacDonald's lab focuses on translational research on heritable ocular disorders. As part of pre-clinical research studies, we are focused on the characterization of the genetic basis of retinal disorders through molecular genetic techniques.   My role as Surgical Assistant comprised assisting surgeons during ophthalmic procedures including but not limited to LASIK, SBK, PRK, and CXL procedures, administering patient medication and eye drops, prepping patients for surgery and post-operative care after. As Clinical Assistant, my work revolved around assisting in pre and post-operative testing for LASIK and IOL procedures. This includes visual acuity, auto-refraction, corneal topography, OCT, fundus photography, and biometry. I also work in administrative capacity by managing patient appointments, referrals and other tasks in the clinic.

My work involves reviewing and uploading ophthalmic imaging, reviewing doctors’ reports, managing referrals, informed consent and liaising between doctors’ offices and patients. Certified ophthalmic assistant supporting various subspecialties including comprehensive, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, cornea, ocular oncology, and occulo-plastics. My scope of work includes taking patient histories, preparing patients for procedures, informed consent, and performing ophthalmic tests including visual acuity, visual field, pupil assessment, tonometry, corneal topography, refraction, ultrasound biometry, amongst other responsibilities.
