Semester Abroad in Tbilisi (Georgia) Russian Studies 82%

I spent a semester studying Russian in Tbilisi, Georgia, at FORM, which included attending lectures across a range of subjects given by academics and scholars in Tbilisi. Engaging with a mix of Russian and Georgian cultures, and exploring an underappreciated but stunning country was a fantastic opportunity, and the ability to understand the geopolitics of the Caucasus has given me a new perspective on the wider Russian-speaking world. Collaborative Research Internship: Text Analyst

Part of a small team invited to work on a six-week research project entitled 'The Language of Engineering', aiming to create a study aid for non-native English speakers writing in the field of engineering. The project was a collaboration between the Colleges of Engineering and Arts & Law and overseen by Professors Tim Jackson, Petar Milin, and Dagmar Divjak. Primarily we examined published Q1/Q4 engineering papers, then used Python and manually analysed various linguistic aspects, focusing on commonly-used collocations and concordances. We created an interactive table on Excel to display our results, along with a language guide and some visual aids. We also collaborated on a blog post for the university reflecting on our experience. I enjoyed using my understanding of the field of corpus linguistics (the study of language based on natural use of language) in relation to language learning and this project enabled me to expand my abilities in new areas, such as self-taught Python, a skill I'd never previously considered! Apart from the project aims, as a team we designed our methods to a research standard. Considering how to make our research useful and accessible also meant we had to be creative with some of our approaches to ensure our results would be properly understood. As we were all working remotely, it meant that communication was key to the success of the project, a skill which has been at the centre of my degree.Following this experience I am now looking further into careers that combine language and technology and would be open to any opportunities.
