      May 2012 - Aug 2015
      Laborer

The position was aiding the dismantling and felling of trees in rural and urban environments. The job required the use of heavy machinery such as wood chippers and chain saws and involved continuous physical labor and heavy exercise. Despite the physical nature of the job, it was ideal for developing core skills used in multiple environments. These include almost seamless teamwork in order to perform a dangerous task safely, the ability to continue a task with testing environmental, spacial and time constraints and communicating with the general public. The safety element of the work was paramount with such a high potential for serious injury. This gave me a great appreciation and respect for safety in the workplace in order to identify and limit potential risks. These skills are easily applicable and transferable to many business environments. Show less

    • Allards International Limited

      Jun 2016 - Aug 2016
      Intern thermal engineer

As summer employment I worked as an intern thermal engineer for Allards International Limited. This is a Dundee based company which designs heat exchangers and pressure vessels for a wide range of industries such as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and energy. Over this time, I was exposed to the thermodynamic and mechanical design of shell and tube, plate and frame, and welded plate and shell heat exchangers. I aided it the analysis of an underperforming plate and shell heat exchanger. This included re-calculating the thermal design and also calculating other parameters to determine what was causing the underperformance. The level of detail of the design process and conception of the possible problems was a very interesting opportunity and learning exercise. This was done while working in a mixed engineering team with thermal and mechanical engineers. This cross discipline interaction was personally the most rewarding as it exposed me to a wide range of people with mixed areas of expertise and knowledge which was a highly enjoyable experience.
