      Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Biology and Environmental Studies Graduate

      Activities and Societies: Sailing Team, Bates Radio Club Double Major in Biology and Environmental Studies. Within the ES department, my specific concentration was Ecology. Additionally, I attained General Education Concentrations (a Bates-specific substitute for minors) in Philosophy&Psychology and Field Studies: Natural Science. I completed a year long thesis my senior year titled: Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) physiology at Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area in response to a pathogenic insect, hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae).

      Conservation Intern

      Worked on various projects, predominantly the Vermont Loon Conservation Project and Mountain Birdwatch. Majority of time was spent on fieldwork and data collection. Administrative components included scheduling lake visits and reviewing volunteer collected data.

      Designed and implemented a three-month study documenting the extent of Hemlock Wooly Adelgid infestation at Bates Morse Mountain Conservation Area in Phippsburg, Maine.

      Worked with local Whiting Farm to research the feasibility of using renewable energies such as geothermal and air-source heat pumps to moderate temperature year round in their commercial greenhouses.

      Assistant to the Director

      Primary obligations included independently designing and implementing research initiatives and facilitating student research projects on the 600-acre conservation area. This entailed working directly with students groups, researching and synthesizing information, data management, data analysis, and creating educational materials for various audiences. Finished products included a comprehensive habitat map of the property, establishment of long term forest monitoring plots, a study comparing data collected in 1995 with current conditions to elucidate pitch pine regeneration, and a story map displaying all studies conducted on the property.       Lead property monitoring and management of 15,000 acres of conserved land, coordinate trail work on 70+ miles of trail, organize two public hiking series, work with easement landowners, property abutters and other stakeholders, and spearhead restoration efforts of 1.5 acres of riparian habitat along the Sheepscot River. I also support the lands team with GIS mapping, data collection and management, and graphic design needs.
