      2009 - 2011
Master's degree Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography 808/1000

Activities and Societies: International environment with students from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America; Networking through collaborative research and research visits, professional training, laboratory techniques and software skills, team work involving various cultural backgrounds and individual planning and execution of a Master's project. Master degree of Science with focus on nematodes, both parasitic nematodes which can damage crops and infect human beings, as well as free-living organisms used as bioindicators and in environmental assessment.

    • Universiteit Gent

      2012 - 2016
      Doctor of Biology Marine Sciences

Activities and Societies: Fieldworking, teaching, writing and presentation skills, networking and collaborative research, scientific professional training, outreach and science communication, laboratory techniques and software skills. This project aimed to understand spatial variability and turnover of the deep-sea fauna in relation to environmental differences and surface primary productivity. Moreover, by studying turnover, new insights were gained on species distribution and in estimating how many species the deep sea harbors. This information can be important for future management of deep-sea areas and in estimating how many species we can afford to loose due to anthropogenic intervention.

      Environmental Consultant

This project focussed on areas which were impacted by oil exploitation and how the faunal community responded to this anthropogenic influence in different benthic depth zones, such as shelf, slope and canyons. Four species new to science were described from this project.

    • Refúgio dos Sagüis

      Nov 2008 - Apr 2009
      Environmental Educator

Environmental educator for children from 2-year old until last-year high school students (~ 17-18 year old). Courses included from identification of plants, animals and their function and medical use, as well as the difference between exotic and endemic species. We focused on the importance of preserving the environment, how to separate garbage and how to decrease litter production and plastic use, as well as how we could recycle and reinvent different types of material.

    • Ghent University

      Oct 2011 - Dec 2011
      Research Assistant

Research assistant on the project ECO2, which investigated the effect of natural CO2 leakage on the fauna dwelling on these ecosystems on the coast of Italy. The aim of the project was to conduct transplantation experiments and see how the fauna used to high levels of CO2 would cope in a CO2-free habitat and vice-versa.

    • Ghent University

      Jun 2012 - Jul 2017

Postdoctoral researcher working on the project Vema-TRANSIT (Bathymetry of the Vema-Fracture Zone and Puerto Rico TRench and Abyssal AtlaNtic BiodiverSITy Study). This project aimed to investigate the effect of physical barriers on deep-sea organisms which could hamper their migration accross different ecoregions. By using molecular data, we gained insight on how much molecular diversity there was in the deep sea across large areas in abyssal and hadal regions and how this diversity is distributed when physical barriers are present. This Postdoc also involved teaching of practical courses in biostatistics and a collaboration with the deep-sea mining company GSR-DEME for environmental impact studies in the Pacific. This collaboration was comprised of an expedition to the GSR claim area in the Pacific Ocean, and the collection of samples to test the potential impact of deep-sea mining on benthic organisms. Show less The PhD project was composed of five fieldwork expeditions to the Atlantic and Southern Oceans, laboratory and data analyses, as well as publication writing.Knowledge of project and budget management was gained, as well as expedition and material planning. Results culminated in 4 publications as first author and 8 as collaborations in parallel projects with International researchers. These results were presented to peers in 6 international conferences and in 5 outreach events in English, Dutch, and French.A parallel education on transferable and specialist skills was followed in order to gain further insight on networking, speaking, presenting, and writing skills, as well as conflict handling in the work environment. Samples were taken up to 9500 m water depth and are currently being sorted and processed. My role in this project involves the coordination of sample processing, data analysis from various deep-sea environments, and the supervision of undergraduate students and student helpers. I am also responsible for time and budget management, and for writing interim reports on the current status of the project. Show less
