I was responsible for reviewing all of the submissions recieved, as well as assigning all editorial board members with essays to review, and later in the process, edit. Along with my Co-Editor-In-Chief, I reviewed the final copy and made any final edits that were required. • Adventures Cross-Country

      Jun 2009 - Aug 2010
      Trip Leader

For two consecutive summers I led groups of 12+ teenage students on 24-day trips through Greece and Italy (2009), as well as Costa Rica and Belize (2010). The trips included many destinations and different activities in each area, such as sailing (Greece, Belize), surf school (Tamarindo, Costa Rica), SCUBA certification (Sardinia, Italy/Glover's Reef Atoll, Belize), wind-surfing, whitewater rafting (Pacuare/Reventazon Rivers, Costa Rica), and cultural immersion and enrichment (Rome, Italy/Athens, Greece/San Jose, Costa Rica). Regular marine biology lessons and community service were also key components of the trips.I was responsible for the health, safety, and morale of each student on these trips, as well as all the accompanying logistical details. All food shopping/meal planning was done by me, and I worked with students to establish cooking groups, who I supervised as they prepared meals. I made regular contributions to the company website with the pictures/videos I recorded. In addition I wrote a weekly blog to keep parents updated on the progress of the trip. Each student had 2 non-consecutive days as the student leader, and between each of their stints I provided them with feedback on strengths and areas in need of improvement. At the conclusion of the trip, I wrote thorough evaluations of each student's leadership and community service performance, which were in many cases used as college recommendation letters.Team-building and stewardship were core values that I instilled in the groups through a number of cooperative games and exercises, and students developed a strong sense of community and teamwork by the end of the trips through working, living, and playing together. My job was to help them come together and get to a point where their decisions were based on the group's best interests, and not just their own. Show less

As a member of a small staff, I had a wide array of ever-changing responsibilities to ensure the successful operation of the residential outdoor science school. In my role as educator I lead 2.5-hour day hikes through the Sierra National Forest, teaching hands-on experiential lessons in geology, forest/wildlife/stream ecology, orienteering, snow science, team-building, Native American history/culture, and forest management. In the spring I lead 5+ mile educational hikes in Yosemite National Park. I served as a mentor for the naturalist intern program, training the interns to utilize their unique skills to be successful educators. I also spent time each week providing training to visiting schoolteachers on the program's curriculum, providing helpful methods to successfully implement it in lessons. Each week I mentored incoming high school cabin leaders, training them to be confident and comfortable role models in their supervisory roles. I carefully monitored their individual progress through first-hand experience and reports from colleagues, and wrote detailed evaluations at the conclusion of their service. In addition, I was a songwriter and performer in nightly campfire variety show performances, and a dining hall attendant at meal times. In the winter during record snows I was a tireless shoveler and plow truck driver, and at recreation time I would provide students with in-services on activities such as snow-shoeing or archery. I provided support to the kitchen/maintenance/custodial staff members as needed. Show less
