      Deckhand

As an AB with Northlink my duties ranged from watchkeeping including fire/security rounds to general ship maintenance and directing passengers on to the car decks and parking vehicles both valet parking and trade. Shift patterns was 12-4, 4-8 and 8-12 both am and pm. Each day included both tie up and letting go along with car deck loading and unloading, working for Northlink was excellent and the majority of the time there was a great atmosphere on board, maintenance duties included, chipping, painting, washing down and any necessary repairs to keep the ships in an excellent condition. I loved my job and took a real passion in my work and pride in my ship and after trying a few different sea jobs I have decided that I aim to find myself a career on board Passenger ferries. Agency Temporary Able Bodied Seaman

As an AB on the Scottish Government Marine Protection vessels my duties vary depending on the rota assigned at the beginning of the trip, As with most ships now watches are 2x 4 hour watches spread over 24 hours, during a watch on these particular vessels there are watch keeper duties which mainly consist of cleaning but could differ if the Bosun needs a hand. Day work on board generally includes maintenance, the usual painting, chipping, cleaning etc but also as a boatman I am on the Rigid Inflatable Boat for launch and recover when the Fisheries officers are boarding or for training. Drills are carried out weekly so during our trip there is 3 to be completed per 3 week trip which include Fire drills, man over board, emergency steering etc. Currently I am on an ad-hoc contract but have recently been offered an interview for a more permanent role. Able Bodied Seaman (SG1A)

As an AB working through an agency life can be very fast paced and very busy, this is something I really enjoy, kept busy, seeing new places and enjoying working life, I think the best part for me is seeing different types of ships and different merchant jobs making me even more proud of the career path I have chosen, All of the ships I have sailed on have had similar duties such as general ship maintenance, mooring, watch keeping, shift rotations, cleaning and upkeep (I have Plenty of Chipping & Painting experience :D ). Although I have enjoyed my time with the agencies I am always on the look out for a more permanent, secure position a path that can take me to the next stage of my career, somewhere I can progress and learn more. I aim to progress and begin my officer of the watch as soon as possible and am putting in as much sea time as I can to get there. I would like somewhere permanent where I can find help and guidance if and when needed, but will be happy with the agency work until such position arises. For anyone unemployed with the certification I would highly recommend you register with either of these agencies. Show less
