      Jul 2018 - Jan 2023
      Biological Technician

Working in the coastal and wetland research lab at the USGS at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Assisting with multiple projects to collect data on marsh and forest elevations through the use of various surveying techniques. Along with vegetation surveys at various marshes throughout the state of Maryland. The research projects that I have been a part of have varied over the years but the focus of all the projects is on the changes of the marsh due to various drivers. I have been a part of a project that is looking at surveying the marshes of the Chesapeake Bay region to get an understanding of how coastal wetlands are responding to ongoing Sea level rise. I have had the opportunity to work on projects in ArcGis and Google Earth Pro to determine locations of potential field sites and to make maps to show relevant biological data. I also have used ArcGis to do analysis of the slope of multiple sites within the forest and marsh of places where we have surveyed. I have done maintenance of pendant temperature light loggers, Solinst water level loggers, and hobo water level loggers along with data collection from a weather station and a Hobo rain gauge. I am comfortable working in the programs of HOBOware and Solinst to retrieve and look through data collected through loggers in the field. Each year that I have worked in this lab there are annual projects that I have assisted with which include processing root ingrowth bags to determine what kind of roots are growing in specific depths of the marsh and decomposition stakes to determine what the decomposition rates are in specific depths of the marsh. Most of the fieldwork is centered at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge located near Cambridge MD, but I have had the opportunity to work in marshes throughout the eastern shore of MD, Delaware, and in Virginia. Most of our projects are joint efforts with organizations such as The Maryland Geological Survey, National Audubon Society and Maryland DNR. Show less
