      Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Design and Applied Arts + Art History + BUSINESS - Marketing & Advertising

      University of Memphis was an extremely well funded program of applied arts and design. Because it was a large university, our small graduating class of 15 graphic design students had for our exclusive use: a complete offset printing press facility, a complete photographic darkroom, state of the art typesetting equipment, a silk screen lab, plus classroom instruction on all fine and applied arts and art history.

      My MA in ART at Syracuse University was a Special Program for Advanced Students, headed by Murry Tinklelman. The University imported dozens of the great working art professional as instructors, bringing them in or our class visiting them all around the USA. These artists were the best in each of their disciplines and taught our small group of 10 students, one on one.

      Advertising / Marketing Dept

      As one of two marketing/advertising associates, we conducted all of the marketing/advertising research for Plough, Inc: Mabelline Cosmetics, St. Josephs Aspirin, Coppertone Suncare Products and Digel Anti-Gas/Anti-Acid. We reported our findings to the Sr. V.P. of Marketing for Plough, Inc. One project I conducted personally was a packaging test for Mabelline's Great Lash Mascara. We designed 7 separate color combinations for the top and bottom of the package. Brown & Yellow, Black & White, etc. The PINK & GREEN package was the clear winner from the responses I obtained from 1000 college aged girls on University Campus. This is what I recommended to the V.P. of Marketing and that is what the company went with for their mascara. All of these years later, Maybelline Great Lash, in its PINK & GREEN package, is and has been the top selling "cosmetic" in the WORLD. Only the colors of the packaging have stayed the same.       As the corporate Art Director and a part of the Dept. of Design and Planning, it was our job to invent the future of Holiday Inns. Working as a member of 3 person team with the President of HI & Sr. VP of Food & Beverage, I was in charge of refining the promotion and I came up with the promotional headline: "KIDS EAT FREE" - which has become the most widely used food promotion in the world, today. As Corporate Art Director I was responsible for all things visual for the corporation, signage, all menus, room #s, restaurant logos, any printed pieces, etc. Show less
