The National Society for Minorities in Honors Conference at Oakland University
Oct 2020 - Oct 2020PresenterI presented my Honors paper proposal, "Closing the Race Gap and Equalizing Honors Education: College-Prep Courses in Secondary School Curricula," during the fifth annual conference of the National Society for Minorities in Honors in mid-October. I was the only Gallaudet Honors student representing Gallaudet University at the conference. My paper proposal was about closing the race gap and equalizing the Honors Education, admissions process, and changes to the secondary school education curriculum. My goal was to bring more minorities to enroll in Honors programs or colleges that failed to achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and provide different ideas of tools and resources needed for minorities to succeed in their academics. University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Jun 2021 - Aug 2021Summer REU InternAs an REU student, I carried out an independent research project. I was assigned to ahost laboratory with a principal investigator and a postdoctoral mentor. I investigated how perineuronal nets act to facilitate or impede plasticity in the whole mouse brain during learning and execution of behaviors. I will be introduced to concepts and research methods used to study neural plasticity, trained in state-of-the art epifluorescent microscopy which collects and stitches high-resolution images of entire brain sections, quantify and analyze data. Several of the research activities I had done this summer are listed below: - accompanied a postdoctoral mentor and a few other grad students performing mouse behaviors and surgery until I am properly trained to do these work with the team. -Performed extensive histological, anatomical, and microscopy, computer analysis, image analysis, video coding behavior, and decoding ultrasonic vocalizations of mice work. Jun 2022 - Aug 2022Non-Clinical Intern/Summer ScholarAs a Summer Scholar, I worked on a project involving two studies that evaluated the vestibular system. The first study focuses on the use of virtual reality in the treatment of Mal de Debarquement Syndrome. The second study focuses on a congenital retrospective analysis of vestibular testing results to determine if there was an association with cognition as measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. In the first study, I evaluated the use of virtual training environments to help patients reduce their pathological overreliance on visual motion cues. In the second study, I extracted data from various vestibular tests and recorded them in a retrospective data excel sheet for further analysis using Pearson's Correlation and paired t-tests.
