    • The National Society for Minorities in Honors Conference at Oakland University

      Oct 2020 - Oct 2020
      Presenter

I presented my Honors paper proposal, "Closing the Race Gap and Equalizing Honors Education: College-Prep Courses in Secondary School Curricula," during the fifth annual conference of the National Society for Minorities in Honors in mid-October. I was the only Gallaudet Honors student representing Gallaudet University at the conference. My paper proposal was about closing the race gap and equalizing the Honors Education, admissions process, and changes to the secondary school education curriculum. My goal was to bring more minorities to enroll in Honors programs or colleges that failed to achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and provide different ideas of tools and resources needed for minorities to succeed in their academics. Summer REU Intern

As an REU student, I carried out an independent research project. I was assigned to ahost laboratory with a principal investigator and a postdoctoral mentor. I will be introduced to concepts and research methods used to study neural plasticity, trained in state-of-the art epifluorescent microscopy which collects and stitches high-resolution images of entire brain sections, quantify and analyze data. Several of the research activities I had done this summer are listed below: - accompanied a postdoctoral mentor and a few other grad students performing mouse behaviors and surgery until I am properly trained to do these work with the team. -Performed extensive histological, anatomical, and microscopy, computer analysis, image analysis, video coding behavior, and decoding ultrasonic vocalizations of mice work. In the second study, I extracted data from various vestibular tests and recorded them in a retrospective data excel sheet for further analysis using Pearson's Correlation and paired t-tests.
