      Diabetic Retinographer

      • Member of a pioneering team initiating a screening program aimed at reducing the prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy. • Worked as a diabetic retinopathy screener and grader experiencing both the hospital and the community setting, working as part of a multidisciplinary team. • Responsible for holding clinics in GPs practices around Bristol, spending a couple of days in each location with the aim of reaching out to all diabetics in the catchment area. • Each appointment was 15 minutes long, during which I had to explain the purpose of the new program, detailing the importance of annual retinal screening for diabetics, the data I would be collating and how it would be used back at the hospital for diagnosis and referral where appropriate. • Screening also involved a lifestyle questionnaire, blood pressure check, sight test and retinal photography. This is where I soon learnt that my approach needed to be patient-centred as the individuals I saw had varying levels of competency in understanding diabetes, resultant complications and the scientific background. In addition the locations I visited were within a diverse city so there were varying levels of English language as well as cultural differences to be considered. Show less
