    • Arthouse jersey

      Apr 2023 - Mar 2024
      Artist educator

In April 2023, I was beyond fortunate enough to be invited back to Jersey by Arthouse Jersey for their Creative Learning Programme. To conduct initial research and development and deliver workshops exploring a variety of methods, approaches and disciplines relating to Jersey's landscape with local community groups. From July 2023, I was commissioned to create a large-scale community installation involving 6 community groups, through embroidery and natural dye workshops, to explore Jersey's land and translate their thoughts and aspiration into textiles. The final outcome was 'Stone Upon Stone' an interactive soft sculptural artwork. Inspired by visits to Jersey’s ancient dolmens, exploring the colours and forms of Jersey’s geology and plant life. The artwork transports us back 6000 years to become our neolithic forebears engaged in the process of building a dolmen. This era marked the dawn of recorded human involvement in Jersey-exploring the terrain, communing with the spiritual realm, partaking in rituals, celebrations and revering the divine essence of the land, sun and sea. This piece urges us to participate and reconnect with nature’s depths. “The Land and Us project is about reconnection to the land through journeys, collective making and experiences. It is also about looking and taking notice of the world around us in order to develop deeper connections and empathy. At a time when Climate Change threatens our very existence, with the global community not adequately responding to the threat, it calls to question the need for a transformation of human to non-human relationships. Through a year-long community and educational programme we will place interconnectivity, mutual understanding and community at the heart of this project. We will work with different members of the community (adults, young people, children and schools), and people that work the land such as farmers, and those that may feel disconnected from nature.” Project statement by ArtHouse Show less
