  Integration of the Research Unit in the Physical Chemistry department

  The research was focused on the area of biophysics and pharmaceutical chemistry particularly in the evaluation of interaction of drugs with membrane models (liposomes) with the objective of identifying changes in the properties of the membrane as a result of drug toxicity or pharmacological action. In this project I gained experience in several methodologies including metering and fluorescence techniques (steady state, by measuring the lifetime and anisotropy measurements).

  Project “A new life for old antimycobacterial drugs: development of prodrugs of pyrazinoic acid activated by mycobacterial esterases as a way to circumvent resistance to pyrazinamide”. This project was centered in medicinal chemistry. Synthesis of pyrazinoic acid prodrugs, encapsulation in liposomes and in vitro and in vivo activity against M.smegmatis, M. avium and M.tuberculosis were realized. I gained experience in chemical synthesis, kinetic studies, HPLC and NMR. I also did a course for working in a BSL3 facility called “Biosafety training for use of the IMM BSL3 facility”. Show less
