While working under Dr. Barbara Carrapa in the Mineral Separation Lab, responsibilities included crushing rock samples, separating sand samples by using the water table, operating the Frantz machine to separate the magnetics from the non-magnetics, using SPT heavy liquid to separate apatites and zircons, and mounting and polishing both apatites and zircons. These procedures required a high level of attention to detail to avoid contamination in an effort to preserve the integrity of the data.Working as a lab technician for Dr. Cohen entailed separating phytoliths from paleolake core samples to determine more about the paleoclimate of the area. The Mineral Evolution project under Dr. Bob Downs aimed at creating a database of minerals, their ages, and locations found in order to further study the evolution of all minerals.Searched for literature and interpreted data and ages published in each paper, entered the data from published papers into an excel spreadsheet then transferred data from excel to the database, learned attention to detail and data organization skills that can be carried on to any set of data that I am given to interpret.
